It's Friday again and time to take a look back at the supplements recommended by Dr. Mehmet Oz on "The Dr. Oz Show" this week. In case you weren't able to tune in all week, Dr. Oz was all about small changes that can make a big impact on everything from your waistline to your heart.
Here are five of his recommendations:
Dr. Oz took a look at popular artificial sweeteners this week to see what's safe and what's not. He recommended stevia, also known as sweetleaf, if you want to go avoid the artificial overall. Produced from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant, stevia has no calories and adds that sweetness you crave to drinks, baked goods and other prepared foods. In fact, due to its high level of glycosides, stevia is between 100 and 200 times sweeter than sugar. You can find stevia in individual packets, bulk containers for cooking and baking and in liquid form. Try to keep your intake below 1 g a day.
This is a supplement you've probably heard of but weren't totally sure what it was. Coenzyme Q10 is commonly recommended to help with heart-related health issues like high blood pressure and angina. It's found naturally in the energy-producing center of the cells, the mitochondria. The liver, heart and kidneys need the most help from CoQ10 to help them produce more energy to function properly. CoQ10 also has antioxidant benefits to protect the body from damaging free radicals. Our levels of CoQ10 can decrease with age or due to certain medical conditions and medications. Your doctor can determine the correct dosage for you, based on deficiencies.
Dr. Oz recommended this amino acid to help anyone who's in need of more human growth hormone (HGH). Produced by the pituitary gland, this hormone peaks in childhood and adolescence and begins to permanently decrease after age 30. Being low in HGH can lead to loss of muscle mass, excess fat storage and sagging skin. Arginine also helps with sexual health, wound healing, boosts the immune system to prevent illness and removes ammonia from the body. You can take 2 g of arginine three times a day to promote secretion of HGH from the gland.
Another supplement to support the pituitary gland, fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) helps to facilitate the secretion of HGH. Fenugreek can also boost your energy to help you feel more revitalized. Other healthful uses of fenugreek include cholesterol reduction and blood sugar regulation due to its alkaloids, protein, fiber and amino acid content. You can steam the actual herb, take it in capsule or tablet form or drink fenugreek tea to get the benefits. You can also cook with it -- the bitter taste of the fenugreek adds contrast to cooked dishes.
5. Wild Lettuce Extract
Dr. Oz recommended this supplement to women who are having trouble sleeping. Made from the stem of wild lettuce, not the iceberg or romaine lettuce you put in your salad, this extract can help to calm you, with a mild sedative effect. The more sleep you get, the healthier you are overall to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight. This extract is a common ingredient in sleep aids and can also be bought on its own. Try 30 mg before you head to bed to fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply for the restorative benefits.
