One of the most common health issues men face as they age is a change in prostate function. One of the most recommended dietary supplements for prostate wellness is saw palmetto, and if you're concerned about your prostate, it's time you knew more about it.

Saw Palmetto Basics
The saw palmetto plant, Serenoa repens, is like a palm and grows berries. The fruit of the saw palmetto plant is what is used to produce supplements and medicines. A traditional medicine of Native Americans, use of saw palmetto for men's health can be traced back to the early 1900s, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMM).

Saw Palmetto for Prostate Health
Once men reach 50, they may begin to experience a change in prostate health and function due to shifts in hormone levels as well as changes in cellular growth. As they get older, the prostate gland, which is located around the urethra, can become enlarged. This condition, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as a frequent urge to urinate (especially at night) coupled with difficulty passing urine.

Saw palmetto may be able to help reduce an enlarged prostate to provide relief for these symptoms. This benefit has been published in clinical studies as recently as 2013 in the medical research Phytotherapy Research. The study also emphasized saw palmetto was well tolerated by participants. Saw palmetto may also be useful in treating infections of the prostate, but more research is needed to verify this action as well as saw palmetto's overall effect on the prostate.

Additional Benefits of Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto supplements can be used to support overall health and wellness. While this supplement needs to be further researched to determine its exact actions within the body, it may be beneficial for the treatment of the common cold and other respiratory conditions, migraines, low libido and anxiety.

If you're interested in trying saw palmetto to support prostate health, be sure to speak with your doctor first, especially if you're undergoing treatment for BPH or prostate cancer. Go over all medications (prescription or over-the-counter) and supplements you take to check for possible interactions.
