On the November 19 episode of "The Dr. Oz Show," Dr. Mehmet Oz welcomed his father-in-law, Dr. Gerald M. Lemole, a pioneer of cardiothoracic surgery, onto the show to discuss his career and the advice Dr. Lemole's given him throughout the pass 30 years. He shared his favorite alternative health solutions that have become go-to remedies in the Lemole household, but one stuck out -- colloidal silver.
Silver? Really? It may seem strange and you may be looking at the jewelry you have on right now wondering how and why you could ingest silver. However, colloidal silver has been used medicinally for almost a century, but not without its share of debate.
Metal As Medicine
Taking silver medicinally first became popular in the 1920s and has since remained a well-known alternative remedy since it's easy for the body to digest and absorb. Colloidal silver was initially taken to fight infections, as an antibiotic would, and is particularly useful for fighting bacteria or fungus, helping treat viruses. Therefore, it's often taken to strengthen the immune system and fight common infections like the cold or flu.
Colloidal silver consists of tiny particles of silver, the colloids, which are then suspended in liquid, typically water. A quality colloidal silver product is as pure as possible, without additives, stabilizers or coloring. Colloidal silver comes packaged in dark bottles and needs to be stored out of sunlight to preserve freshness and potency.
How to Use It
Trying colloidal silver is pretty straightforward. There's no need to dilute it and it's often sold in convenient spray bottles that help with measuring. Dr. Lemole recommended aiming a few sprays at the back of your throat to ease discomfort, fight infection and prevent a sore throat from worsening. He also suggested spraying it on a minor wound or skin irritation like a burn, acne or eczema. It can also simply be swallowed as is.
Now, for the rules. It's extremely important to follow all instructions when using colloidal silver products. In extreme cases, ingesting excessive amounts of colloidal silver over a longer period of time can lead to a condition called argyria, which results in a blueish-gray complexion. Pregnant women are advised not to use these products. Anyone diagnosed with a medical condition should speak with their doctor before trying colloidal silver products.
Dr. Lemole's Other Immunity Boosters
In addition to colloidal silver, Dr. Lemole had some other notable suggestions to add to your daily routine for short-term and long-term health:
Echinacea -- This herb can help prevent illness and fight off a cold or flu already in progress. He suggested taking 500 mg three times a day. You can also find echinacea tea, which has a very herbaceous taste.
Red Clover Tea -- Try drinking one cup daily of this amazing tea to remove toxins from the liver, kidneys and lymphatic system. It's also rich in antioxidants to fight off free radicals.
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) -- Also known as the "universal antioxidant," ALA protects the heart, stops oxidative stress and helps the lymphatic system drain more efficiently. Aim for 600 mg daily for best results.
CoQ10 -- This supplement can help you feel more energized while protecting vital organs like the heart from oxidative stress. Adding 120 mg to your daily routine can make a big difference.
