With everything you have going on in your busy life, it may be hard to concentrate on the task at hand. Whether it's a business meeting or a college final, there are daily events you need to be 100 percent present for. So how do you keep your mind from thinking about what you're wearing on your date Friday during Tuesday's chat with your boss?

If you're tired of feeling scatterbrained, there are natural ways to find your focus.

What Causes a Concentration Coup

Concentration difficulties and short-term memory loss can range from minor nuisances to diagnosed conditions such as attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or Alzheimer's. Along with aging and chemical imbalances in the brain, poor concentration and memory lapses can actually be attributed to an unhealthy diet high in calories and fat, sugar and chemical preservatives as well as a lack of exercise and constant exposure to environmental pollutants.

Maintaining maximum cognitive function means correcting an deficiencies. Eat more fresh foods like fruit, nuts and vegetables and less red meat can help. You should also exercise on a regular basis -- an essential for your overall health -- avoid smoking and drinking too much alcohol, get enough sleep and stay hydrated. Meditation can also be a way to help you learn to better focus your thoughts.

Supplements for Concentration

To further enhance your brain’s health and promote mental agility, there are supplements available that support intellectual performance and cognitive brain processes. When shopping for one of these products, it helps to know what ingredients to look for. These natural and organic ingredients have been found to promote better memory, sharper focus and longer attention span:

  1. Acetyl-L-Carnitine:
Also known as carnitine, this compound helps produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which acts to enhance sensory acuity and sustain attention. Clinical studies have found acetylcholine reduces amyloid accumulation in the brain -- a major factor in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
  2. Phosphatidylserine:
This chemical is produced by the body but only in small amounts. As a supplement, it's derived from cabbage and soy and works (pre-mad cow disease, it was sourced from cows) by delaying age-induced mental deterioration and improving cognitive skills and behavior in younger people. It's also said to improve performance in activities like sports.
  3. Omega-3 DHA Fish Oils:
These essential fatty acids from cold-water fish are found in the brain in high levels and help in brain performance, memory retention and behavioral conditions. Omega-3s can help with the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder.
  4. Ginkgo Biloba:
A popular herbal extract, ginkgo aids in the transport of oxygen to the brain, improving memory function and cognitive skills. It inhibits brain decline by slowing down the platelet activation factor -- a contributor to internal blood clotting.
  5. Ginseng:
Whether referred to as Asian, American or Korean ginseng, they all belong to the Panax species. Ginseng contains ginsenosides, a compound exclusive only to their species, which is believed to be responsible for improving memory and mental sharpness and restoring energy. In one study, ginseng increased the ability for abstract thinking, an important faculty role in something like mathematics.
  6. Siberian Ginseng:
Siberian ginseng is not a member of the Panax species, but its active ingredient, eleutheroside, aids in mental agility and improves performance. Siberian ginseng is an adaptogen -- an herbalist's term for a substance that helps in treating physical ailments and alleviating mental stress.
  7. Coenzyme Q10:
CoQ10 is an antioxidant better known for its benefits on cardiovascular health. As a brain booster, it fights against free radicals to help carry more oxygen to the brain and enhance blood circulation to prevent memory loss and decrease in brain function and skills.
  8. Dimethylaminoethanol Bitartrate (DMAE):
DMAE is an organic compound that has, among its many functions, the ability to reduce the lipofuscin accumulation in the brain. Lipofuscin is a product of free radicals that blocks the thinking process and memory areas in the brain.
  9. Vitamin B3:
In its nicotinamide form, vitamin B3 protects the central nervous system and prevents loss of memory. This vitamin also shields neurons from damage that may lead to Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease.
  10. Vitamin B6:
Also known as pyridoxine, vitamin B6 plays an important role in the metabolism of proteins and the production of neurotransmitters. Proteins are used in brain cell repair and neurotransmitter chemicals maintain cell communication, enhancing memory retention and cognitive performance.

These substances may have their own actions that interfere with other medications. Ginseng and other stimulants, for example, shouldn't be taken by a person who is on antidepressants or MAO inhibitors. It's best to consult a health practitioner if you or your child have been diagnosed with a medical condition or are on medication, especially for a condition like ADD or ADHD, before using concentration supplements.

If you feel like your mind is being pulled in a million directions, consider natural supplements -- they just may be your best tool for keeping it all straight.
