On today's episode of "Dr. Oz," weight loss expert and creator of the RevAbs workout system, Brett Hoebel, stopped by to explain how you can get a ripped midsection in just one month. Sounds like a tall order, but like all health and fitness goals, the right combination of diet, exercise and supplements can produce amazing results.
In addition to a healthy diet of lean proteins and fresh veggies and a routine of "abcentric" exercises (working the abdominal muscles at all times to burn maximum calories), Hoebel recommended CLA and L-glutamine to help you beat the bulge.
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), or tonalin CLA, is an omega-6 fatty acid that helps you burn fat by increasing your metabolism. This thermogenic effect makes your body process the food you consume faster, turning fat into energy. That extra fat is also converted into lean muscle mass. CLA is a great choice for anyone with thyroid issues that can make it difficult to lose weight and keep it off. Try 1,000 mg for the best results.
In addition to weight loss, CLA has a host of other benefits. Taking CLA daily can help lower your risk for osteoporosis, heart disease and some cancers like skin and breast cancer. CLA is also credited with lowering "bad" (LDL) cholesterol, reducing insulin resistance, boosting your immune system and easing symptoms of food allergies and asthma.
The second supplement he recommended is L-glutamine, the most abundant amino acid in the body. Taking L-glutamine helps your body convert sugars into energy, instead of letting them accumulate in the body, particularly in the abdomen. It also raises your metabolic rate while at rest. This amino acid also helps to keep your nitrogen levels in balance to help your body recover after exerxcise. By helping to transport nitrogen to the muscles, you're better able to get through your workout and feel less drained and sore when you're done exercising. Try taking five to 10 g for optimal results.
In addition to weight loss and muscle recovery, L-glutamine can help remove toxins like ammonia from the body, boost your immune system and support cognitive function as well as digestive health. It's commonly taken by individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) for its digestive benefits and those with cancer for easing chemotherapy symptoms.
Both of these supplements are meant to be taken before bed. As Hoebel said, they work best as part of a comprehensive diet and exercise plan, so stick with it and glorious abs are on the way.
