Upcycling is the repurposing of waste or scraps you would normally throw away. Finding a new use for these items means less that ends of in landfills.

These are our 20 favorite ways to repurpose items around the house to get the most bang for your buck while also reducing your own carbon footprint at the same time.

1. Don't throw away old jeans -- use the scraps to make coasters to set your favorite beverage on.

2. Turn old wine bottles into vases. Use whatever art supplies you have at home to decorate them, or simply steam off the labels.

3. Mason jars make excellent cups for drinks.

4. Scraps of wallpaper are perfect for lining drawers to prevent damage.

5. Glue corks to a scrap sheet of wood or cardboard and hang on the wall for notes, photos and lists.

6. Make some decor for a party quickly with old paint samples cards. String them for garland and hang on the wall.

7. Old maps make excellent wrapping paper for gifts or use them to mat photos in frames -- this works especially well for photos from your travels.

8. Put small plants in aluminum cans. Just be sure to drill a few holes in the bottom.

9. Cut old undershirts to use as rags for cleaning the house.

>10. Convert a stained pillow case into a clothing hamper for dirty laundry by attaching a hook and hanging it on a closet doorknob.

11. Citrus fruit peels can be filled with melted beeswax and a wick for sweet-smelling candles.

12. Beer bottles are ideal for bud vases.

13. Use an old sweater to make a new pillow cover for the throw pillows you use around the house.

14. Snap the ends off those cheap plastic pants hangers and use them as clips for your dried goods like baking mixes, nuts or seeds to prevent spoiling.

15. Leftover painter's tape or electrical tape can be used to make a unique design on your luggage to prevent airport mishaps.

16. Put pancake or waffle batter into an empty condiment bottle to easily squirt into the hot skillet.

17. Use the tabs from beverage cans to double your closet space by threading them over the hooks of your hangers. You can then hook another hanger to the first one.

18. Save scraps from fruits and vegetables for your compost pile -- there's no better way to feed your plants.

19. Cut an empty milk jug in half to make a convenient planter. Fill with small stones or soil and be sure to make a few holes in the bottom.

20. Lastly, an oldie but a goodie -- cover a toilet paper roll in peanut butter and roll it in birdseed. Hang it on a tree to attract birds!
