As the natural health industry continues to evolve, more of a shift has occurred toward whole food supplements. While there are many companies new to the idea, New Chapter can say it's a practice they've been following since the beginning.
Founded in 1982 by Paul and Barbi Schulick, New Chapter is one of the leading manufacturers of whole food supplements. Acquired by Proctor & Gamble in June 2012, they're now more able than ever to source the very best ingredients to continue producing their signature wellness formulas.
New Chapter's Commitment to Non-GMO
In order for an ingredient, product or even a facility to be considered non-GMO, it must be free of genetically modified organisms. This means the plant, herb, etc. was grown in its purely natural form.
In 2003, the Non-GMO Project was founded. This third-party organization evaluates ingredients and products to determine if they're in fact non-GMO. Those that pass are given a label indicated that product is Non-GMO Project Verified.
New Chapter submitted their entire line for evaluation to the non-GMO project and is able to label all their products as Non-GMO Project Verified – a point of great pride for the company. In order to ensure they can maintain this status, New Chapter takes great pains when sourcing its ingredients from carefully selected and biodynamic farms around the world. This often means greater costs for the company. For example, the average cost of a kilo of chamomile is $23. New Chapter pays $321 for their organic, non-GMO chamomile. This extra expense is justified when customer report noticeable differences when using their products.
A Unique Production Process
All of New Chapter's suppliers and facilities are certified organic as well as their signature fermentation process, which helps them retain as much of the nutritional properties of their raw ingredients as possible. The goal is to create products that have been “biotransformed.
Here's how a nutrient is created for a New Chapter product:
Step No.1 -- Organic brewer's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is combined with natural plant carbohydrates.
Step No. 2 -- The targeted nutrient (vitamin C, vitamin D, etc.) is added to this active yeast solution in order to be cultured.
Step No. 3 -- To continue the fermentation, non-GMO soy and additional organic foods are added. The soy used is also completely fermented, which allows it to be more easily digested. During this process, the nutrient is absorbed by the yeast and transformed.
Step No. 4 -- Enzymes from tropical fruits are added.
Step No. 5 -- Lactic acid bacteria is added.
Step No. 6 -- Low heat is applied to finish the process while keeping the metabolites intact.
Step No. 7 -- The nutrient may then be combined with herbs, vitamins and minerals to create specific blends.
Continuing Their Mission
New Chapter doesn't just hold themselves accountable for the ingredients they use and the products they produce – they want to create more transparency in the industry that requires labeling of all GMO foods.
As of ths year, New Chapter is a platinum sponsor for Non-GMO Month 2013 (this month). The company is also a partner for the Will Vote for Food and the Just Label It campaigns. They supported Prop 37, which aimed to make labeling of GMO foods mandatory. New Chapter's Director of Sustainability Sara Newmarket even lobbied on Capitol Hill for the cause.
It's this commitment to their principals that sets them apart. October is Non-GMO Month and the perfect time to get to know a company like New Chapter. Check out our entire selection at eVitamins today!
