It's Earth Day! Time to think about protecting our planet.
Reducing our carbon footprint is a priority for many of us, but you don't have to skip right to the most advanced sustainable practices. An action is more likely to become a habit if it doesn't completely derail your life -- start with simple changes you can make daily. That habit can then lead to lifestyle change and you're on your way!
There are plenty of ways to go green in your daily life. Here are 10 ways for you and your family to get started:
1. Brown bag it, sort of. Bringing your own lunch and snacks to work is a great way to save money and control your nutritional intake. Try a reusable bag and BPA-free containers to transport your edibles instead of throwing one away each day.
2. Use less water. Shut off your water when you're brushing your teeth or washing your face until you're ready to rinse. Men who shave in the sink, this goes for you, too. You can also find shower heads that allow you to turn the water on and off while you suds up.
3. Try composting. A great way to feed the planet is by putting what we get from the Earth back into it. Composting is a way of using old food to fertilize and nourish the soil in your yard or garden and creates less waste.
4. Ditch the plastic. If you find yourself heading to the vending machine or convenience store for bottled water, try a reusable water bottle or bring your own mug or glass to work to keep at your desk.
5. Wash on cold. Washing your clothing using only cold water saves energy and prevents colors from running together! Dry any clothing on a rack or line that is in danger of shrinking.
6. Recycle whenever possible. Check all bottles and containers for recycling information and dispose of any chemicals or sensitive items (i.e. batteries) properly.
7. Hit the switch. Turn off the lights whenever you leave a room and unplug any unused electronics -- that includes the toaster, coffee maker and even your computer.
8. Buy organic. Purchase foods and household items that are organic when your budget allows and check for packaging that can be recycled.
9. Start a garden. Even if it's just a pot on the windowsill of your kitchen, start somewhere. Growing your own herbs, sprouts, fruits and vegetables is a great way to live sustainably and know exactly what's going into your body. Gardening is also a great lesson in responsibility for children and teaches them to appreciate where their food comes from.
10. Give your body some green. Give your body the goodness of nature and you'll reap the rewards. Enjoy whole, organic foods, drink plenty of water and get outside (as long as the April showers are at bay). Remember, before there were cars, SUVs or planes, we humans got around on our own two feet. I'm told, this action still works.
