Our bodies need some daily sun exposure in order to produce vitamin D for strong bones and a healthy immune system. But you can easily overdo it. Following these 10 suggestion will allow you to enjoy the summer sun with less risk.
1. Apply sunscreen properly
Fill up a shot glass and you've got the right amount of
sunscreen for the entire body. Apply it liberally to the entire body at least 30 minutes before heading out into the sun and water.
2. Dress appropriately
When you're out hiking or walking around town, make sure to wear light, breathable fabrics that will prevent you from overheating in the sun. Moisture-wicking fabrics are best when exercising outside.
3. Remain hydrated
Drink plenty of water before, during and after sun exposure to avoid dehydration from loss of electrolytes. Symptoms of dehydration include dizziness and shaking hands.
4. Cover your eyes
The skin around your eyes and your eyes themselves are also very sensitive to the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen to the eyelids and make sure to wear sunglasses and/or a hat to shield your eyes.
5. Bring along snacks
Make sure to carry healthy snacks with you, like a
protein bar, when you're outside for long periods of time. Exertion and sweating will make you burn carbohydrates and
protein.
6. Reapply sunscreen properly
Applying sunscreen once at the start of a day outside isn't enough. Sunscreen should be reapplied every three hours at least, especially if you're swimming or sweating a lot.
7. Don't overexert yourself
If you aren't sure to exercising outside, take it easy when first starting out. As mentioned earlier, make sure to properly hydrate and eat a balanced meal.
8. Use an umbrella
Bring an umbrella along when going to the beach so you can take shelter from the sun throughout your time outside.
9. Carry aloe vera gel
If you overdo it in the sun, apply some
aloe vera gel to cool and soothe sunburned skin. Store the bottle in your cooler to increase its analgesic effects.
10. Know your limits
Most importantly, pay attention to how you feel when out in the sun. If you notice yourself feeling lightheaded or nauseous or see a rash appear on your skin, it's important to get out of the sun, as these are signs of sun poisoning.
