What to Eat to Look Younger

Looking younger is as easily as going grocery shopping. Find out what items you should have in your cart to turn back the clock.

Take a look inside your pantry and fridge. What's in there? Cookies? Ice cream? Frozen dinners? You may not realize it, but those foods you stock up on may be aging you.

A diet rich in whole, natural fruits -- plenty of fruits, vegetables, grains and protein -- is ideal for maintaining a youthful appearance. Ditching the processed or fried foods as well as limiting sugar intake will help you keep a radiant appearance as well as a strong immune system.

So what should you shop for? These five foods are our favorite anti-aging staples to always keep on hand:

1. Spinach
As if you needed more reasons to eat your daily greens. Spinach provides antioxidants like lutein and beta carotene. Antioxidants are compounds that shield the cells of the body against free radical damage we encounter in our daily environment. By preventing this damage, you're less likely to see the development of fine lines and wrinkles. We like adding spinach to smoothies to help us get enough weekly servings.

2. Goji Berries
Also known as wolf berries, goji berries are packed with antioxidants, vitamin C and beta carotene, which is a form of vitamin A. These phytonutrients have amazing anti-aging benefits and goji berries are one of the best sources for them. You can enjoy this superfood in a healthy trail mix with almonds, pumpkin seeds and cacao nibs.

3. Pomegranates
One of the original superfoods, pomegranates are loaded with good stuff, but the main anti-aging component of this fruit is vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant but also supports tissue health. Vitamin C promotes even skin tone and less wrinkles by supporting collagen production. You can add the arils from a pomegranate to a salad for some crunch or drink the juice on its own.

4. Green Tea
Easily one of the healthiest beverages on the planet, green tea is praised for its abundance of antioxidants, polyphenols like EGCG. Drinking green tea can lead to a brighter complexion as well as a faster metabolism -- and who doesn't want that? The key to making great-tasting green tea is to not over steep it. Between one and three minutes is all the time you need to make a mug of this amazing elixir.

5. Salmon
The essential fatty acids, like omega-3s, found in oily fish like salmon nourish all the body's tissues, like the skin. They have anti-inflammatory properties, keep the skin hydrated and may even lead to a smoother complexion and more lustrous, shiny hair. Aim for a couple servings a week of salmon -- try broiling or baking it or purchase sushi-grade salmon and make your own rolls.
