Feeling zapped of energy? Pain ruling your life? Dr. Mehmet Oz addressed these concerns on "The Dr. Oz Show" this week. He had natural solutions for each of these problems to help you get through your day with more energy and motivation with less pain and fatigue holding you back.
These are the five supplements the doctor thought should be on your list this week:
1. Vitamin B12
According to Dr. Oz, 15 to 40 percent of Americans are lacking vitamin B12, which could be the reason they're slinging energy drinks, coffee and other supplements all day long to stay focused. Symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency include fatigue/lack of energy, unusual mood changes, an inflamed, red and cracked tongue, tingling in the feet or numbness, difficulty concentrating and poor memory. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), adults should consume 2.4 mcg of vitamin B12 daily. Just remember, taking a large amount of vitamin B12 will affect you the same as a smaller dose, closer to the desired amount.
2. Omega-3 Fish Oil
Dr. Oz talked about women who experience "perimenopausal rage" between the ages of 35 and 55 this week. This type of anger is characterized by quickly changing moods or a tendency to make a big deal out of a small issue. Women who experienced more severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms or postpartum depression are more susceptible. Omega-3 fish oil can play a key role in getting those hormones in check, as part of a healthy, balanced diet. It also supports the heart and brain. The recommended amount of omega-3 fatty acids for adults is between 2 and 4 g daily, according to the American Heart Association (AHA).
If you suffer from migraines, butterbur (Petasites hybridus) can help prevent the onset of symptoms, as recommended by Dr. Oz and his guest, Dr. Russell H. Greenfield of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Migraine pain is often accompanied by nausea, dizziness and sensitivity to light and sound. This herb has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to stabilize the blood vessels, preventing the irritation that leads to migraine headaches. Dr. Greenfield recommended between 75 and 100 mg of butterbur daily to help improve symptoms. Take this supplement twice a day, with meals, for best results.
Another one of Dr. Greenfield's favorite picks for natural pain relief is bromelain. Derived from pineapple, this mixture of enzymes is especially helpful for anyone who suffers from sinus pain brought on by inflammation of the sinuses, causing them to swell. Bromelain also promotes healing of minor injuries. If you're taking anticoagulant medications, know that bromelain can cause thinning of the blood and increase bleeding. To help stop the symptoms of sinus pain from irritation or infection, try taking 200 mg of bromelain for four to six days to provide relief.
5. New Chapter Zyflamend -- 60 Softgels for $22.17
According to Dr. Greenfield, a common source of lower back pain is inflamed muscles. This nagging pain can make working, exercising and even sleeping difficult. One of the products he recommends most is Zyflamend, a highly researched herbal supplement from the brand New Chapter. This product contains several different herbs, such as rosemary, Hu Zhang and ginger, that all have anti-inflammatory properties. Try taking one softgel twice a day with meals for up to four weeks to help you find relief from back pain. Be aware that it can also cause thinning of the blood. Be sure to drink plenty of water.
