Mangosteen has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including skin disorders and female health issues associated with menstruation. However, the most exciting theory out there is that mangosteen may be helpful in the fight against heart disease, along with proper diet and exercise.
What Is Mangosteen?
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia and enjoyed around the world. The fruit can be eaten and cooked with and all parts of the fruit -- including the pulp and bark -- can be used to make medicine. In Asia, the rind of the fruit as been boiled for years to make a tea. The fruit has also been used to make topical ointments.
Inflammation and free radicals are risk factors for heart disease. Inflammation is a natural response by the body to injury or illness, but it can get out of control and become taxing and damaging to the body. Free radicals are a byproduct of energy production and also exist in our everyday environment. They can cause damage to the cells of the body, including those in the heart, causing them to weaken and age.
The active compound within mangosteen suggested to help with inflammation and free radical damage is mangostin, a xanthone, which is a type of antioxidant. Antioxidant-rich foods can help reduce inflammation and fight free radicals to not only prevent damage but also strengthen the body's natural defenses, the immune system. Mangosteen may be able to help lower cholesterol, prevent atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and lower your risk for heart disease.
Mangosteen is also rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes, which benefit the entire body, including the heart.
A 2009 study published in Nutrition Journal evaluated mangosteen's effects on inflammation and antioxidant activity. They found obese patients consuming 18 fl oz of mangosteen juice daily experienced reduced levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker for inflammation throughout the body.
A second study conducted in 2009 and published in the Journal of medicinal food examined mangosteen's effects on the immune system. Fifty-nine healthy subjects consumed a mangosteen supplement for 30 days and were found to have improved immune function and reported feeling healthier overall in a self evaluation.
More studies, using larger groups of people, will be needed to determine the exact actions of mangosteen within the body and its benefits for human heart health. However, these early studies are promising.
How to Enjoy the Benefits of Mangosteen
The first way you can add more mangosteen to your daily diet is by drinking mangosteen juice (sometimes referred to as XanGo juice). This delicious juice can be consumed on its own or combined with other ingredients. Try making a smoothie with it or adding it to some green juice to sweeten it up. The other way to get the benefits of mangosteen is through a supplement. Capsules or tablets often allow you to get a more concentrated amount of the active ingredient.
There aren't any known side effects with mangosteen supplements or drug interactions. However, it's always best to be cautious when adding new supplements to your routine.
