Here's How to Flatten and Not Fatten Your Tummy

Flatten Your Tummy Tip No. 1 -- Stand Up Straight

Before you hit the gym and do endless sit-ups or cardio exercises, the first thing you have to do is to improve your posture. That’s because when you slouch, it tends to make your stomach pooch. If you stand up straight, you’ll notice a significant difference in how your tummy looks. To have better posture while standing, follow this technique: align the ears over the shoulders, shoulders over the hips, hips over the knees and knees over the ankles. Try to keep the shoulders open. The navel should be drawn to your spine and weight should be kept even on the balls and heels of the feet. Even if you don’t do any abdominal exercise, you can achieve a much leaner look just by improving your posture. That’s not all, when you have good posture, your energy levels and lung capacity increase as well.

Flatten Your Tummy Tip No. 2 – Don’t Make it a Tummy-Only Routine

It’s a common misconception that if you want to have flat tummy, you should do a hundred crunches a day and that’s it. But that’s not really it. Increasing abdominal strength doesn’t happen when you train the body in isolation. It should instead be a whole-body experience. Fitness experts agree that if it was possible to workout only certain areas of the body and not others, then the jaw would be hallow because of all the working out you do when talking, eating and chewing. Don’t focus too much on your abs and neglect the other muscles. Core muscles like the glutes and back muscles should also be incorporated into your workout. One way to ensure that is to do Pilates. This works all the core muscles along with the arms and legs.

Flatten Your Tummy Tip No. -- Do Easy but Effective Exercises

You don’t have to spend the whole day exercising. Just 30 minutes of your time each day is more than enough to help you achieve a leaner tummy in a few weeks or months. One of the most effective exercises to do daily is the canoe twist. To do this, you need to stand upright with your feet apart. Create a solid grip with your two hands by interlacing your fingers. Then slowly exhale and sweep your hands, arms, shoulders and chest to the left like you are rowing a canoe. Do this while lifting the left knee up and to the right. Return slowly to the original position while inhaling. Repeat the exercise 20 times.

Another routine to try is the cat kick. With this, you need to stand with your feet together and your arms extended as if they were airplane wings. Exhale and then bring your right leg forward and up. Simultaneously, sweep the arms forward until they reach the shoulder level and round the spine. You should feel like your navel is pressing towards the spine. Inhale as you open your back up and go back to your original position. Repeat the steps with the other leg. Do 20 repetitions.

Also effective in flattening up your tummy is the Pilates Zip Up. To get started with this, stand upright with your heels together. Turn your toes slightly outward. Lift your arms with your hands joined under your chin. Exhale and press the arms downward. Be sure to keep your hands and arms as close to your body as possible. Lift your heels off the ground to tiptoe. Hold this position for two seconds, inhale and then go back to your original position. Do 20 repetitions.

Flatten Your Tummy Tip No. 4 -- Take a Good Look at Your Diet

Now you also have to keep this in mind, even if you do all the exercises in the world but you have extra fat on your belly, the abs won’t be visible. Having a proper diet plays a crucial role in getting rid of this belly fat. Apart from keeping yourself active, you also have to watch what you eat. Stay away from calorie-ridden and fat-laden foods. Go for those that are high in nutrients and fiber. Consult a nutritionist so you can come up with a low-fat, high-energy diet that you’ll need to stay in top shape.

All these tips can help you get the flat tummy you’ve always wanted. But just remember that there are no shortcuts to fitness. If you resort to quick fixes, the results will only be temporary. Be smart and opt for a fitness regimen that is gradual, steady and safe.
