Ah, the bliss of youth -- the time in our lives when we look amazing and feel invincible. But once adulthood arrives and we lose the rose-colored glasses, it's time to face the fact that we're aging.
While we can't go back in time and tell ourselves to wear more sunscreen or stop squinting, researchers are always looking for ways to turn back the clock on our appearance. One such ingredient that's been making waves -- actually, erasing them -- is Argireline.
What Argireline Is and How It Works
Argireline is the trade name for Acetyl hexapeptide-3 (marketed by Lipotec, a research laboratory in Barcelona). This hexapeptide is found within a substrate of botulinum toxin, also known as Botox. Peptides are tiny fragments of proteins. Argireline is used to reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles in the skin of the face. It works by preventing muscle contraction in the places on the face that cause wrinkles (like laugh lines or crow's feet) by blocking proteins from connecting with cells in the body to trigger muscle contractions.
What makes Argireline different from Botox is how it's used. Botox is injected while Argireline is applied topically, with solutions typically containing between five and 10 percent Argireline. Another main difference between treatments is Botox destroys these proteins, while Argireline nearly disables them temporarily, to relax the muscles almost to the point of paralysis.
If temporarily paralyzing some muscles in your face sounds a bit scary to you, you're not alone. However, research to date has found Argireline to be a safe, non-toxic option for eliminating wrinkles from the outside in when used properly. Studies continue regarding treatments like Botox and Argireline, but side effects are mostly minor, temporary and rare in occurrence.
A 2002 study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science and conducted at the Center for Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Universitas Miguel Hernandez in Spain, showed a 30 percent wrinkle reduction in healthy women after 30 days of applying a 10 percent Argireline emulsion. A 2011 study conducted at Mahidol University in Thailand also showed 30 percent reduction in wrinkles, particularly around the eyes, in women between ages 35 and 45 who applied a 10 percent Argireline gel twice a day for 30 days.
Using Argireline Products
Argireline is now an ingredient commonly found in skin creams, serums and other treatments. These products are available without a doctor's visit (right here at eVitamins!) so you can address your skin concerns in the privacy of your own home and without a hefty bill. Here are some tips for shopping and how to use the products:
Look for a product that's a multitasker. The best topical treatments include a mix of other ingredients, such as vitamins, herbs and minerals, that help to stimulate collagen production while brightening the complexion.
Check the label for ingredients like alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and pycnogenol for antioxidant benefits. Antioxidants help fight free radical damage.
If you're going for the most natural approach, choose one without parabens (preservatives) or other artificial ingredients like dyes or scents.
Be sure to follow all instructions. Products typically require you apply them twice a day to clean skin for maximum results.
Be sure to moisturize after applying.
If you could really go back in time, would you? Probably not. But with Argireline on your age-fighting team, your complexion doesn't have to stay in the present.
