Skincare may not seem like something you want to deal with, but how you treat your skin now impacts how you'll look and feel later on in life. Taking the right steps to protect your skin can help prevent not only the signs of aging like wrinkles and brown spots, but also reduce your chances for developing more serious conditions, like skin cancer.
These are the six steps all guys need to remember to have great skin now and down the road:
1. Wash your face twice a day.
Make sure to cleanse your face when you get up in the morning and before you go to bed using a gentle cleanser that works into a nice lather. You don't need something that burns or is too abrasive, especially if you shave regularly. Also remember to wash your face immediately after working out to remove dirt, oil and bacteria that can lead to acne breakouts.
2. Use a moisturizer.
Once you've cleaned your face and shaved, be sure to use a moisturizer to hydrate and protect the skin. A moisturizer will also reduce irritation from shaving or from any topical products you use. If you use an acne treatment, you can apply it after your moisturizer to prevent over drying.
3. Be gentle.
Don't be too harsh on your skin. This applies to every step in your skincare routine. When cleansing, gently massage your skin and then pat it dry with a towel instead of wiping, which can pull on the skin. If you have acne or an ingrown hair, picking is an absolute no-no because it can cause infection and scarring.
4. Watch your diet.
What you put in your body is directly related to what the outside looks like, right? So drink plenty of water, cut back on alcohol, caffeine and sugar-filled drinks and make sure your daily meals include plenty of fruits and vegetables. Throwing in a multivitamin is another important step.
5. Exfoliate regularly.
Using an exfoliating scrub or mask one to two times a week helps remove not only dirt and bacteria but also dead skin cells that can clog the pores. This is an important step to prevent painful ingrown hairs when shaving and also to keep acne at bay. When shopping for a scrub, look for one with the smallest granules you can find -- the larger the pieces the more abrasive, which can actually result in tiny tears that can worsen skin conditions.
6. Wear sunscreen all year round.
Prevent the damage of the sun's rays and reduce your risk for developing skin cancer by layering on the SPF daily. Make sure to reapply sunscreen if you're out in the sun for extended periods of time or working out outside and breaking a sweat. Find a moisturizer with sunscreen in it and you're good to go.
These steps don't take a ton of time but they can make a big difference. Remember, your skin is your largest organ, so look after it!
