Research shows that marriage is good for a person’s health. The results show married people have better access to health services, a more lively sex life, experience less stress, live a better and healthier lifestyle, have lower chances of having depression, diabetes and heart disease and definitely have longer lives as compared to their counterparts who are single.

Marriage may be beneficial but here’s the catch: unfortunately, men and women don’t receive equal benefits from the union. According to the report, men are more likely to improve their sex life while women tend to become more depressed in the long run. The research also suggests that getting hitched may not be really necessary because just by staying in a long-term relationship or by living together, men and women can reap health benefits. Even same-sex couples could have health gains.

The following is a list of benefits love can bring to you and your loved one:

  • Love is one key to a longer life

People who are married are less likely to pass away at an early age, though the link between a long life and marriage is stronger among the males than females. Marriage is also considered effective in warding off violence, deadly accidents and other calamities which can be avoided.
  • Love lowers the person’s risk of contracting serious illnesses

The reason why marriage can prolong a person’s life is that it decreases the chances of having serious diseases such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and other chronic illnesses. The report shows that the rate of acquiring diseases is higher among unmarried men than the married.
  • Love provides room for improvement among men

Bachelors live a less healthy lifestyle than the bachelorettes, and they are most likely involved in several vices such as drinking, smoking and other unhealthy practices. But once they tie the knot with the woman they love, they tend to change their lifestyles for the better. They drink and smoke less than they have before marriage. In a study conducted in 2005, a woman who married a smoker could possibly start smoking too but when a man marries a woman who smokes, he doesn’t resume or begin smoking himself. Experts say that women are better when it comes to emotional support than men.
  • Love keeps sadness away

Couples tend to complain about their partners most of the time, but in reality having someone beside you is good for your mental health. Since women are more prone to experiencing depression, being in a stable relationship or marriage lessens the level of depression. The study also shows that love is one way to stabilize women with bipolar disorder. This trend is not the same in bipolar men.
  • Love helps you cope up with stress

According to a study, men are more likely to get stressed out than women. But when they are in a romantic relationship or a marriage, the stress levels significantly decrease.
  • Love doesn’t really care about weight

When it comes to waistline, men tend to gain more weight than women after marriage. In fact, many married men are more likely to cross over to obesity than married women. But when love is present between the husband and the wife, they could inspire one another to be more active and live a healthier lifestyle.
  • Love makes your sex life more satisfying

Being in a long-term relationship could lead to an improved sex life. This is particularly true for men. Women, on the other hand, have a less fulfilling sex life because they carry the burden of domestic duties and they feel like they don’t get appreciated for all the efforts they make.
  • Love leads the way to financial stability

Research shows married people are indeed more stable when it comes to finances than those who are single. Though the husband largely remains as the main breadwinner in the family, more women are also stepping up to work and provide economic welfare for the families. Women still receive economic benefits from a legal union. The financial stability could be attributed to the careful budgeting and resource allocation among the different household needs such as food, utilities, education and health services. The couple must manage their money well to provide all the things needed by their children.

It's a common joke to say that the spouse is the source of your graying hair, but research is indicating otherwise. Love and marriage seem to have more health benefits than anyone would have imagined. So the next time your spouse is making you a little crazy, it's best to smile and think of how much that person has helped your life for the better.
