Chronic pain. Whether it's in your back, joints, feet or head, having consistent pain can make daily activities a struggle. However, not everyone wants to take pills everyday.

White willow bark is a natural painkiller that's been shown to provide relief for many common pains. With its anti-inflammatory effects, it may be just what you're looking for.

How While Willow Bark Works
White willow bark contains several beneficial compounds that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and immunity-boosting effects. The main active component of white willow bark is salicin, a chemical that has an analgesic effect (painkiller). The body converts salicin into salicylic acid once its ingested. This chemical is what makes this bark similar to aspirin, which is why it's commonly used as a natural pain remedy.

What It Can Treat
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMM), white willow bark has been used since approximately 400 BC, around the time of Hippocrates. It was used to relieve inflammation and reduce fever. Since then, white willow bark has remained a popular remedy in China and throughout Europe for conditions including low back pain, joint pain, headaches, osteoarthritis and inflammatory conditions including tendonitis and bursitis.

A 2001 German study published in the journal of Phytotherapy Research found that a dose of 240 mg of salicin daily reduced pain by 14 percent after two weeks of treatment. Researchers concluded white willow bark had a moderate analgesic effect and was generally tolerated well by the study group.

Willow bark has also been used to treat other conditions, such as colds and the flu, by fighting bacteria and strengthening the immune system.

Proper Dosage
White willow bark is available in dried form that can be made into a tea, as a powder (capsule), liquid supplement or as a tincture (a liquid extract containing alcohol). On the June 27 episode of "The Dr. Oz Show," Dr. Mehmet Oz recommended white willow bark for anyone suffering from back pain, specifically, pain caused by a herniated disc. Dr. Oz recommended the tincture method, combining four to six milliliters of white willow bark with a glass of water up to three times a day to relieve pain.

White willow bark is not recommended for children and should be avoided by women who are pregnant or lactating. Taking white willow bark can result in an upset stomach and shouldn't be taken for a period longer than 12 weeks. Also, if you're currently being treated for a medical condition or are sensitive to aspirin, you should avoid white willow bark.

White willow bark may your solution to ending your chronic pain and the cycle of pills. Would you try it?
