This past week, Dr. Mehmet Oz took a big step. He admitted he recommends so many healthful alternatives and treatments, it can get a little confusing. On that note, his theme was to simplify, helping viewers determine exactly what they needed to be eating, taking and doing to achieve optimal health.

Attention all sugar and artificial sweetener addicts! This is the product to help you cut back. Dr. Oz discussed the health pitfalls of consuming too many artificial sweeteners throughout your day, such as digestive upset and weight gain. He and guest Ashley Koff, RD, explained the way to eventually eliminate these products from your life is to follow the 3R's: reduce, replace and renew your taste buds. One way they suggested is by using stevia extract -- available in granule or liquid form -- to add the sweetness you crave without the calories or chemicals. Produced from the stevia plant, this all-natural sweetener is just as effective, without the worrisome side effects.
A daily multivitamin was the first of Dr. Oz's three essential supplements for your medicine cabinet. He recommended looking for one with 10 vitamins and 10 minerals, the essential nutrients you may not be getting enough of in your diet. Make sure the supplement has 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) and not more than that, to avoid complications with medication. The second thing to look for is iodine, which supports vital organs like the heart, thyroid and brain. He suggested taking your multivitamin in two divided doses, one in the morning and one at night, to help the body absorb the greatest amount of nutrients instead of expelling them as waste.
3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids or Fish Oil
The second supplement Dr. Oz said you should be aiming to take on a daily basis is an omega-3 supplement, such as a fish oil. Look for one that contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), about 600 mg, as well as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). These components are beneficial to the health of the heart, arteries and brain. In fact, the brain is made up of mostly DHA, which supports proper brain function to prevent degeneration and boosts overall mental health. Keep your supplement in the fridge to help it last longer and take it in the morning with your breakfast to get the greatest benefit.
4. Calcium with Magnesium
The last supplement he recommended everyone take on a daily basis is calcium with magnesium to support the bones, teeth, muscles and joints. Calcium is an essential nutrient that fortifies and protects these tissues from deterioration, which can lead to conditions like osteoporosis. Calcium and magnesium together are also said to support healthy sleep. The ideal dose should be 600 mg of calcium and 400 mg of magnesium, taken once a day. Dr. Oz recommended taking this supplement with a full glass of water, at least one to two hours before or after your multivitamin, to make sure the calcium doesn't block the absorption of the other nutrients.
5. Sea Buckthorn Juice
This final recommendation game from holistic health expert Dr. Andrew Weil, who visited the show on Friday. Sea buckthorn is a type of berry native to Tibet. This superfood is loaded with antioxidants to protect the cells against free radical damage as well as vitamin C and essential fatty acids. Sea buckthorn juice is known to boost the immune system and support healthy skin and hair, making it a popular beauty secret as well. Dr. Weil recommended combining 1 oz of sea buckthorn juice with 1 oz of agave nectar and soda water for a powerful elixir to reduce inflammation and improve overall health. Serve it over ice for a delicious way to drink to your health.
