Dr. Mehmet Oz spent the week discussing serious concerns with guests and viewers that can have immediate and long-term effects on their health. We learned more about how to manage physical, mental and emotional issues that can lead to bad habits.
While he didn't name any specific types of supplements to try this week, these are topics Dr. Oz has touched on before, so we compiled some past recommendations from Dr. Oz for similar scenarios. Here are five supplements to try based on the topics covered on "The Dr. Oz Show" this week:
1. Satiereal Saffron
If you're someone who eats in times of stress, depression or other situations related to your emotions, this herbal supplement can help. There are two main components of satiereal saffron that can trigger serotonin, the "happy hormone" -- crocin and safranal. Satiereal saffron has been shown to promote serotonin production to help curb the cravings associated with emotional fluctuations. Dr. Oz recommended taking 176.5 mg of satiereal saffron extract to help combat these urges and shed pounds. Two female guests who appeared on the show back in February lost three and five pounds respectively over the course of a weekend with that dose.
Binge eating was another topic focused on this week when Dr. Oz sat down with three women who cannot control their urges to eat, consuming thousands of calories in one sitting. The women attributed their binges to stress, previous trauma or past emotional scars. If you're experiencing excess stress or anxiety that are causing you to medicate with food, consider giving relora a try. Relora is a blend of two herbal extracts -- Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendronamurense -- which help to calm the mind, promote a positive outlook and cut cravings by regulating cortisol levels. Dr. Oz recommended 750 mg, divided into two or three doses a day, to help you get back in control.
A slowing metabolism is part of growing older, as guest Kirstie Alley experienced. The famous actress' weight has fluctuated dramatically in the past decade, all in the public eye. One of the supplements Dr. Oz has recommended before for a slowing metabolism is fucoxanthin, an extract of brown seaweed. When fucoxanthin is combined with pomegranate seed oil, you get Xanthigen, a proprietary blend that's been shown to help reset a slowing metabolism to burn stored fat. The supplement takes a minimum of six weeks to take effect and Dr. Oz suggested 200 mg per day to get things moving again.
4. Chromium Polynicotinate
Another issue for Alley was controlling her cravings for sugar. She admitted to Dr. Oz her habit of drinking up to 12 cans per day of grape soda before she got her diet in check. When tackling the topic of sugar addiction in the past, Dr. Oz recommended chromium polynicotinate. Chromium polynicotinate helps keep blood sugar levels from spiking or crashing dramatically, which can make you go for more sugary foods like soda or candy to help you feel more energized, alert and happy. Dr. Oz recommended 200 mcg per day and to consult your physician if you're currently regulating your blood sugar for medical reasons.
Another topic this week was about how superfoods can help cure what ails you, making you feel healthier, stronger and more energized throughout your day. One of the superfoods Dr. Oz has mentioned in the past is spirulina, a type of blue-green algae. Spirulina is rich in gamma linoleic acid (GLA) as well as B vitamins, amino acids and digestive enzymes. Whether you eat dried spirulina chips, mix some spirulina powder into your food or blend it into a shake, this green superfood can help fill in the nutritional gaps of your diet and give you natural energy.
