It doesn't matter how old you get, if you overdo it on the drinking, you'll be paying for it tomorrow. The Japanese claim to have found a way to prevent the hangover by consuming turmeric before they head out for a night of fun.

But does it work?

Hangover Basics
First of all, what is a hangover? A hangover is a collection of symptoms that directly result from the over consumption of alcohol. Plain and simple. If you drink too much, you may experience a couple or all of these symptoms for up to 24 hours:

Turmeric for Prevention
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a type of root commonly used in Asian cooking. It's bright orange in color and adds bold flavor. This root's main medicinal use is as an anti-inflammatory, due to the presence of curcumin, its active compound. Inflammation is the body's response to injury or stress, causing swelling and pain.

When it comes to a hangover, the claim is turmeric helps calm the entire digestive system, particularly the stomach, and fortify the liver, according to The Japan Times. The liver part is especially important -- the turmeric is said to help the liver process out the alcohol. The Japanese take turmeric in pill form as supplement and also consume drinks or nutritional "shots" (no booze in these) that contain turmeric along with additional ingredients, like B vitamins.

Unfortunately, there aren't any published clinical studies regarding turmeric's ability to prevent a hangover specifically at this time, but that hasn't stopped turmeric from being one of the most popular hangover prevention supplements in Japan. However, the anti-inflammatory benefits of ingesting turmeric alone make it worth adding to your diet and supplement routine to support joint health and more. Other benefits of turmeric are antioxidant activity to fight off free radical damage as well as general support for detoxification. Could all this mean no headache? Maybe.

Other Tips for Hangovers
Not drinking at all is the only surefire way to prevent a hangover, of course. But there are other steps you can take to reduce your chance of waking up in misery and also some proven ways to reduce symptoms.

Prevention:

  1. Eat a full meal beforehand or with your drinks.
  2. Drink a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage and before bed.
  3. Stick to the same drink or type of drink.
  4. Be sure to go to bed with enough time to rest.
  5. Know your limits and stick to them.

Treatment:

  1. Drink plenty of water.
  2. Try coconut water for electrolytes.
  3. Have some ginger (tea, gum, etc.) to calm an upset stomach.
  4. Try some white willow bark to treat a headache.
  5. Get as much sleep as possible.

It's always important to be smart about how much you're drinking so you remain safe during your night out and feel great the next day. Check back tomorrow for more natural remedies and health news!
