Green tea has been around for as long as anyone can remember, probably because nobody has been around for 4,000 years. Since the time of the ancient Chinese, the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant have been ground up and made into tea. Believed to have medicinal properties, this beverage was said to help everything from healing wounds to promoting digestion. This drink is still popular today, but has taken on many different forms.

1. Weight Loss Aid -- Green tea contains an antioxidant known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG has anti-inflammatory properties and is one of the best performing weight loss supplements in various scientific studies. Research continues, but the weight loss effects of EGCG appear to be mostly from an increase in metabolic rate and appetite suppression. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, 300 mg of green tea extract taken two to three times daily, may help in the effort to trim the waistline.

2. Cardiovascular Disease Preventer -- Research has shown green tea has been known to guard against cardiovascular disease by lowering cholesterol levels, improving the ratio of "good" to "bad" cholesterol and reducing platelet aggregation.

3. Eliminates Tooth Decay -- According to a research study published by Preventive Medicine, drinking one cup of unsweetened green tea could increase the health of your teeth. The study suggests the antimicrobial molecule known as catechin, found in high proportions in green tea, can destroy bacteria and viruses which cause throat infections, dental cavities and tooth loss.

4. Blood Pressure Reducer -- Regularly consuming green tea has been thought to lower blood pressure levels of the elderly after eating. Studies are still ongoing as to whether the effect is the same on other groups of individuals.

5. Acne Treatment -- Due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antioxidant and anti-fungal properties, green tea is a powerful anti-acne treatment. Green tea increases the molecules which bind to sex hormones and thus effectively reduces their levels. Green tea essentially balances the hormones linked to acne.

6. Soothe Sunburn -- While green tea isn't able to block UV light, it helps protect exposed skin cells from further damage. Studies have shown directly applying green tea to the skin helps protect from sunburn and even some forms of skin cancer. The anti-inflammatory properties of green tea make it a very popular inclusion in sun screens and in ointments to treat sunburn.

7. Managing Diabetes -- Green tea plays a role in the regulation of glucose levels; slowing the rise of blood sugar after eating. This can prevent high insulin spikes and resulting fat storage.

8. Antioxidant Properties -- While research is ongoing, green tea has shown an increase in popularity as a potent antioxidant supplement. Green tea contains a great deal of polyphenols which have the ability to reduce the risk of many forms of cancer and stabilize blood lipids.

9. Protector Against Liver Disease --  Green tea protects the liver from the damaging effects of toxic substances. While 10 cups of green tea is believed to be needed to counteract the effects of a long night, the caffeine amount will be quiet high.

10. Reduce the Appearance of Wrinkles -- Green tea is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties which prevent the activation of the enzyme matriz metalloproteinase. This enzyme has been known to cause wrinkling of the skin and the appearance of fine lines.

Whether you're taking it as tea, in a pill or even as an ice cream flavor; it 's important to get around 500 mg of green tea per day. Keep in mind the amount of pure green tea per cup will vary depending on the quality of your tea. The only potential downside associated with green tea is insomnia because of the caffeine. Be sure to consult your doctor before starting any green tea regimen, especially if you're pregnant, taking medications or are sensitive to caffeine.
