This was a big week for supplements on "The Dr. Oz Show." Each one addressed an issue we may encounter as we get older and they ran the gamut from disease prevention to improving our physical appearance. The goal is to live the longest, healthiest life possible. Makes sense, right?
Dr. Mehmet Oz dished out a lot of useful information to help us age healthier. Here are the five top supplements he suggested giving a try:
1. Huperzine A
This supplement was recommended by guest and alternative health expert Dr. Andrew Weil. Otherwise known as Chinese club moss, huperzine A is great for anyone experiencing memory loss with aging. Daily use may even help in the fight to prevent Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Weil recommended 300 mcg of this supplement daily for the best results. He also suggested exercising your brain to help prolong memory and improve cognitive function. You can try learning a new language, solving puzzles or playing card games to keep your mind sharp.
Another supplement recommended by Dr. Weil, niacin is actually vitamin B3. Niacin has been shown to raise levels of "good" (HDL) cholesterol. Keeping your cholesterol in the desired range can lower your risk for developing cardiovascular diseases as well as having a heart attack or stroke. Niacin can also provide an energy boost. To help improve your cholesterol, he recommended 500 mg of niacin each night before bedtime. Be sure to look for an extended release formula and one that says "no flush" if you can -- taking in extra of this B vitamin can make you blush!
3. Black Raspberry
Produced from raspberries grown in Oregon with a distinct, black hue, this extract serves as a powerful antioxidant in the body. Recommended buy naturopathic doctor an certified nutritionist Lindsey Duncan, black raspberries contain more anthocyanins than any other berry which limit oxidative stress and prevent free radical damage. This is a great supplement to add to your routine if you have a family history of any of these cancers. Duncan recommended 500 mg twice a day for the best protection.
5. Borage Oil
As we age, our tissues can go through changes, such as our hair, skin and nails. Mainly, they lose protein and moisture, which can lead to brittle, dry hair and nails that tend to break and thinner skin that can sag and develop wrinkles. To help combat these issues and keep that youthful appearance, Dr. Oz recommended 500 mg a day of borage oil, in capsule form. Borage oil contains gamma linoleic acid that helps put moisture and nutrients back into the hair, skin and nails. However, as with all natural treatments, you have to be patient, as new hair and nails take time to grow and cell turnover in our skin slows as we age.
The bonus tip: Eat beans! If you're over the age of 40, beans should be a staple in your diet. They're packed with fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals and can help reduce your risk for developing conditions like heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
