|You know vitamin C supports your immune system and your skin, but did you also know
it could help you manage your weight? Keep reading to learn all about it.||
The body needs vitamin C on a daily basis for many reasons. You've probably doubled up on vitamin C when you felt a cold or the flu coming on or maybe your facial serum contains vitamin C to combat fine lines and age spots.
What vitamin C can also do is support weight loss and weight management. Do we have your attention now?
A Little About Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient. This means the body only uses what it needs from foods or supplements and expels the rest through the urine instead of storing it. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin C for an adult woman is 90 mg a day and for an adult male is 75 mg a day, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you're feeling weak, bruising easily or have dry, brittle skin, hair and nails, you may be deficient in vitamin C. In extreme cases, deficiency can lead to a condition called scurvy.
Vitamin C for Weight Loss
Vitamin C is said to promote weight loss by supporting the metabolism. Your metabolism is the rate at which the body uses fat for energy, burning it off instead of storing it or burning off fat that is already stored within the body. When you're young, your metabolism is much faster, but it slows as you age naturally and can also be impacted by medications or certain medical conditions, like thyroid disease.
If you aren't getting enough vitamin C in your daily diet, your metabolism may also be suffering. According to an article published in 2005 in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, individuals getting adequate amounts of vitamin C on a daily basis will burn 30 percent more fat than those who don't. This correlation was verified further in a study published in 2007 in The journal of nutrition, stating vitamin C was inversely related to waist circumference, body mass index and body fat percentage in both men and women.
Vitamin C for was also recommended by Dr. Mehmet Oz on "The Doctor Oz Show" as a natural way to support weight loss. (Editor's Note: eVitamins is in no way affiliated with Dr. Oz. Dr. Oz doesn't endorse any specific supplements or brands.)
Getting More Vitamin C
Now, it's incredibly important to note none of the aforementioned studies recommended consuming a daily amount of vitamin C beyond the RDA. While the benefits of adding more to the diet continued to be studied, there isn't a dosage recommended specifically for weight loss at this time. Your best bet is to make sure you're eating vitamin C-rich foods like citrus, bell peppers and broccoli, and then adding a supplement if needed. Vitamin C should also be included in your multivitamin. You'll also reap all of vitamin C's other benefits.
Consult your doctor if you're interested in taking a higher dosage to support weight loss. Your doctor should always be informed when you add a new supplement to your daily routine, especially if you're currently being treated for a medical condition or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
