|Coleus forskohlii is a natural supplement that can help you shed unwanted pounds to
reach a healthy weight while also protecting your heart||
If you're looking to better manage your weight but don't want to take any stimulants, forskohlii is among the most popular natural supplements out there. It also has some positive benefits for the heart.
Forskolin is a chemical derived from the root of the plant Coleus forskohlii, which is native to Asian countries like Thailand, Myanmar and India. It's been used there for several centuries to support general health. Supplements containing this chemical may be called forskohlii, coleus forskohlii, ForsLean or forskolin -- they're all the same thing.
Forskohlii for Heart Health
One of the most popular traditional uses for this supplement is for heart health. Forskohlii helps lower blood pressure by relaxing and widening the arteries. It also helps the heart pump blood more efficiently with a stronger beat, thus bringing more oxygen-rich blood to all the vital organs, like the brain. Lastly, forskohlii has been used by patients with congestive heart failure.
Forskohlii for Weight Management
When it comes to weight loss and weight management, forskohlii has been shown to boost the metabolism, which is the rate at which the body burns fat to prevent it from being stored in the body, suppress the appetite and encourage the development of lean muscle mass. It's become a popular supplement among athletes and non-athletes alike for this reason.
Most studies conducted thus far have used animals, such as a 2005 study published in the Journal of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, which showed weight loss after eight weeks of daily supplementation with forskohlii. Another 2005 study with human participants, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, examined how forskohlii impacted the weight of mildly overweight women after 12 weeks of taking 250 mg of a forskohlii supplement twice a day. The women didn't make any changes to their diet. The study showed that the women were able to avoid additional weight gain by taking the supplement without any notable side effects.
More studies will need to be conducted with human participants in order to make an exact dosage recommendation (the aforemented animal study involved a much higher dosage of the extract). What these early studies do show us is that forskohlii can be a tool in weight management, working alongside proper diet and regular exercise to inhibit weight gain.
The best part about forskohlii is that it isn't a hormone or a stimulant, which reduces the likelihood of side effects like the jitters, acne or disruption in sleep patterns. However, like all supplements, it's best to check with your doctor first before taking it, especially if you're being treated for a chronic condition like heart disease, high blood pressure or asthma. Forskohlii may interfere with medications used to treat these conditions, including oral steroids and blood thinners. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding shouldn't take forskohlii. You should also stop taking it at least two weeks before any surgery to ensure proper healing.
