As St. Patrick’s weekend draws closer, we should remember the humble beginnings of the alcoholic beverage. Whiskey was referred to as the water of life and Jagermeister rose to favor by fighting colds. It appears the best drinks started off as medical remedies and many people still over-prescribe the use of their liquor. However, if you’ve found that alcohol has had the opposite effect on your body it might be time to try a new cocktail.
The mocktail has come into popularity along with the rise of bitters and craft cocktails in bars. A mocktail, if you haven’t heard yet, is a non-alcoholic beverage with the same spirit as your favorite night caps. Why is this such a great thing? Because it leaves those uninterested in drinking traditional alcoholic beverages the ability to have more options than simply soda or water. So let’s get into why bitters are worth your interest. The exact origin isn’t known but they came into favor in the 19th century as a, you guessed it, medicinal cure. Today we know there’s no such thing as a miracle elixir but studies have been conducted that back up many bitter-selling companies. A study from 2013 reported good findings in relation to cholesterol and glucose levels when taking Swedish bitters over a longer term. Adding a few shakes of bitters to club soda is a great way to enjoy a cocktail-quality drink without risking the alcoholic side effects. Yes, bitters does contain alcohol but because it’s a flavoring (think vanilla extract) you’re using only a little. This is great for those of us who love to have a good time at social events but don’t want the calories associated with alcoholic drinks or for people who simply choose not to drink. Stir your designated driver up something special or end the night with something to help re-hydrate your body.
Something else to look for is shrub. An old flavoring agent from the colonial days, shrub is like drinking vinegar that makes a great mocktail when mixed correctly. Best of all, you can make it at home with a saucepan and a little fridge space. It’s a favorite of mine with citrus soda on a warm day.
