Peel. Tuck. Injection. Suction. All of these words apply to procedures that can lead to a more youthful complexion, but none of them sound like much fun, now do they?
Diet and lifestyle have a major impact on what you look like now and will look like in the future and there are ways to undo past damage and protect your skin. These are 10 of our favorite supplements, nutrients and tricks to achieve and keep healthy, glowing and youthful skin:
1. Hydrate and plump from within.
Phytoceramides are plant compounds, typically from wheat or sweet potato, that have been dubbed a "facelift in a bottle." Your skin naturally contains ceramides within its layers, which are responsible for keeping the skin firm, plump and hydrated. However, as we age, we have less of them, which can result in sagging or wrinkled skin. Phytoceramides (taken as an oral supplement) restore that inner hydration to improve skin's texture.
2. Get your vitamins.
Vitamins play a key role in skin health. Vitamins C and E in particular keep the skin protected from free radicals that can cause oxidative stress and damage, resulting in wrinkles and fine lines. These nutrients also improve the appearance of scars and can help fade dark spots when applied topically. Vitamin C is available in serums to be applied to the face daily and vitamin E oils can also be used on a daily basis.
3. Check your vices.
Quitting smoking is the most important and the most obvious one, but other habits you may have can impact your skin. Staying out in the sun without sunscreen and drinking too much alcohol (contains a lot of sugar, which we'll get to in a minute) can age your skin more rapidly than you may think and lead to dangerous effects on your health.
4. Cut the sugar.
Exfoliating with it is one thing, but sugar, aside from rotting your teeth, can also age your skin. It will make your complexion dull and thin, leading to wrinkles, or cause it to become inflamed. Instead, go for a natural option like stevia or raw honey to sweeten foods and drinks. These options have fewer (or no) calories and don't contain artificial chemicals.
5. Drink your greens.
A green smoothie or juice drink can help you get vital nutrients, like vitamins and minerals, into your body as well as antioxidants. Even one green drink a day can make a huge impact on your complexion. Look for an all natural, no-sugar-added mix or make your own. The one vegetable you should make sure to include? Cucumbers, which are packed with silica, a mineral that supports healthy skin.
6. Get more sleep.
Another obvious choice, but how many of us actually wake up in the morning feeling like we have slept long enough? Aim for seven or eight hours a night to allow your skin to regenerate and absorb all those fancy creams and serums we like to slather on at night. If your skin has to spend 12 or more hours soaking up makeup or dirt, it deserves as long as possible to feel clean.
7. Hydrate every way you can.
Water is a true health and beauty wonder. Good, old fashioned water without the syrups or fancy colors is what your body craves and when you have enough of it, it shows. If you're bored of drinking water, you can get the water you need through the food you eat, as featured in Tuesday's post.
8. Enjoy healthy fats.
Good fats, like omega-3s, benefit the heart, brain and the skin. They keep the skin moisturized and smooth for a more radiant complexion. Nuts, avocados and olive oil all contain essential fatty acids, which support the skin. Another reason to add these foods or a fish oil supplement to your daily routine. Bonus Tip: You can use honey and avocado to create a moisturizing skin mask.
9. Grab the vinegar.
Apple cider vinegar is a popular kitchen staple and home remedy for too many conditions to count. It also makes a great astringent for mild exfoliation and the removal of deal skin cells that can dull the complexion as well as dirt and other yucky stuff. Just apply to a cotton ball and swipe along the face. Since the smell is strong, maybe it's best to try this one before bed.
10. Reach for retinol.
A form of vitamin A, which is known to benefit the skin, retinol is nature's most powerful wrinkle fighter. Retinol helps smooth the complexion, fights acne and fades the look of scars and brown spots that can make you look older than you are. Look for a serum and apply every other night to start -- retinol can be tough on your skin, so start gradually.
