If you’re hosting a Halloween party or just want to have some seasonal sweets around the house, you can make them healthy by adjusting the ingredients you use to make them.
Sugar is the biggest culprit in cookies, cakes and other baking goods. You’ve probably heard a ton about Splenda but probably not enough about stevia.
Stevia is another natural sugar that you can use in baking that will cut out unhealthy sugar from your sweets. According to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, using too much of it can cause a bitter taste. However, if you place a couple drops in a glass of water, taste it and keep adding one drop until it is to a desired sweetness, it can be the perfect sugar substitute.
Baking tricks when using stevia:
- Stevia doesn’t have the same properties as sugar in making cake rise, so be sure to whip egg whites when using this sugar substitute.
- Another trick is to flip the cake out of the pan as soon as it is done to keep it from sinking.
- Use more baking powder or baking soda for bread.
- One cup of sugar equals ½ teaspoon of stevia.
- Using vanilla or lemon extract will make stevia taste less sweet, so you may have to add more.
Halloween Chocolate Chip Cookies
6 to 9 drops of stevia liquid
⅔ cups of all-purpose flour
Orange food coloring
¼ cup of applesauce
¼ teaspoon of baking soda
¼ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 tablespoons of honey
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Melt the butter. Mix the honey, egg and stevia and then add the butter. Add in the rest of the ingredients including the food coloring. Form cookies and then place on cookie sheet two inches apart. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
Make a Halloween Meal

- 1. Cut up some cheese sticks so that they look like fingers and then place a small piece of deli meat at the top of the cheese finger to look like a nail.
- 2. Carve an orange as you would a pumpkin and fill it with fruit.
- 3. Take a block of cheese and cut it up so it’s about a quarter inch thick. Then cut ghosts out of them. Use raisins or other healthy treat to make eyes and a nose.
- 4. Take sandwich bread, Halloween cookie cutters, Fluff and red food coloring. Use the red food coloring to dye the Fluff, cut the bread and place the Fluff in between the two pieces of bread. You now have a blood sandwich.
- 5. Make spiders with Ritz crackers, cream cheese, pretzel sticks and raisins. Simply place eight pretzel sticks behind the Ritz crackers, keeping them in place with the cream cheese and use the raisins as eyes.
