This week on "The Dr. Oz Show," the focus was conquering both chronic health concerns and daily physical annoyances. Dr. Mehmet  Oz discussed fighting the visible signs of aging, solving common body quirks like brain freezes and welcomed Dr. Andrew Weil, an expert in holistic medicine.

In case you were sneaking in one last vacation and missed the show, here are the top five supplements Dr. Oz discussed on the show this week:

1. Red Yeast Rice Extract
Produced from fermented rice, red yeast rice extract is a natural way to lower levels of "bad" (LDL) cholesterol. Keeping cholesterol in check reduces the risk for heart attack, stroke and heart disease. This extract works like a prescription statin medication in the body, but is less likely to cause the side effects associated with these medications. Statin supplements can mainly affect the liver in a negative way. If you have issues with regulating your blood sugar, avoid taking this supplement. The ideal dosage is 600 mg taken twice a day. Red yeast rice shouldn't be taken by anyone with have issues with regulating blood sugar levels.

2. Fiber
Fiber is the best way to keep the digestive tract clear and a diet rich in fiber is also recommended for keeping cholesterol levels in check and promoting cardiovascular health. Fiber binds with waste to help bulk it up and move it easily through the intestines so it can be expelled regularly. Without enough fiber, you can experience symptoms of indigestion like diarrhea or constipation. Aim for 40 g of fiber everyday to help keep the digestive system moving properly. You can try adding foods like bananas, kale and whole grains to your diet, or go for a supplement like psyllium husk.

3. Selenium
Found naturally in soil and water, selenium is an essential trace mineral that should be taken on a daily basis for its potent antioxidant properties. Selenium protects the cells of the body against free radicals which can damage and age them. Research shows selenium also has anti-cancer properties, which makes it even more worth taking. Selenium may be beneficial in lowering the risk for breast, colon, lung and prostate cancers as well as heart disease. Make sure you're getting 200 mcg on a daily basis to keep the immune system on guard.

4. DHA
If you're concerned about losing your memory or if there is a history of Alzheimer's disease in your family, make sure you add a DHA supplement to your routine. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid found in the brain and the more of it you have, the better. Taking a DHA supplement improves circulation to and from the brain, reduces inflammation and inhibits plaque buildup associated with Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Oz recommended 600 mg daily to help keep memory sharp and prevent cognitive decline.

5. Lingonberry
Related to the blueberry, cranberry and bilberry, lingonberry (Vaccinum vitis-idaea) is the superfruit making waves in the health world. With a high concentration of polyphenols, the antioxidants of the lingonberry provide countless benefits. Lingonberry can help reduce inflammation and control blood sugar while fighting off free radicals that can age and damage cells. Berries also have natural anti-cancer properties. You can eat the berries, drink lingonberry juice or take a supplement, typically in capsule form, daily to the benefits of this superberry.

These great supplements and more are available at eVitamins. "The Dr. Oz Show" returns on Monday, September 10, so check back next Friday to learn more about the supplements featured on the show all week!
