How to Make Your Own Homemade Bath Bomb

These bath bomb recipes are made with amazing ingredients so you get the best in skin care, aromatherapy and relaxation. Make them for yourself or as gifts. We even have some that sooth aching muscle or irritated skin. Check them out now!

Whether you're looking for a moment of peace or some relief, baths are a great way to give yourself a recharge. If you recall a previous article, baths can help relieve headaches, improve digestion, soothe muscle and nerve pain, and ease skin irritation. What better way to spice up all of that than with a perfectly made bath bomb designed for and by you? Plus, these make amazing gifts for birthdays, holidays and special occasions. 

Best of all - you know what's in it. No secret phantom preservatives and questionable chemicals. I call that clean.

What is so great about a Bath Bomb

The rage about bath bombs are all about the fizz and who can really argue? The bubbling tingle in the water is reminiscent of hot water jets without the expensive tub. This is all due to chemistry, my dear Watson. 

Citric acid is the key to the bath bomb fizz. When it hits the water, it mixes with the other ingredients, creating an acid-base reaction which results in bubbles of carbon dioxide. Why tell you this? Because if you can't get citric acid (we sell it here), you can use cream of tartar, another acidic material. If you like a recipe with citric acid but don't have it around, I've just given you the way to substitute!

If you love the colors, feel free to add some with food coloring to any of these recipes. Make sure to monitor the amount of liquid you're adding into the mixture. All the mixtures should feel dry with just enough moisture to clump and pack into a mold. If you don't want to use artificial colors, I found this great guide on natural food colorings.

Bath Bomb Recipes To Try At Home

Before you begin on your bath bomb adventure, I've got some notes, The end mixture should feel like wet (not soaked) sand before you shape it. If it's too wet, you can add more baking soda in. This may affect how much fizz you get in the bath but if it's just a little, you should still see good results. If it's too dry, try using water, witch hazel or alcohol to spray the mixture a little at a time. There should evaporate and leave you with the perfect chemical balance. 

It's important to go slow when adding the liquid ingredients into the mixture for this reason. Adding too much can hamper the bubbling effect and if you add it too quickly, you risk setting off the citric acid too soon. If it starts to fizz while you mix, it's not going to work and you'll have to start over.

All recipes require a mold to put your bombs into. While most homemade bath bombs stick to the round look with snapping plastic ball molds (usually clear ornaments), feel free to use other containers like muffin tins or ice cube trays. There are some very cute molds out there perfect for you to get creative with!

Oatmeal and Honey Bath Bomb

Oatmeal and honey are great for skin especially if it's dry or irritated like with eczema or psoriasis. According to Dr. Surbhi on Dermatocare, oatmeal moisturizes skin with anti-inflammatory antioxidants that help restore skin. Not only that, but it helps skin look younger, soothes sunburn and reduces fungal itch.

Honey, on the other hand, has natural acid that acts like a natural scrub to help get rid of dead skin cells. It also helps heal cuts and burns and has anti-fungal and viral properties (but only raw honey). Combine all this with essential oil and this recipe is a dream for your skin. From Bellatory.

Oatmeal and Honey

  • 4 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 1. Mix the dry ingredients (baking soda, citric acid, oat flakes) together.
  • 2 tablespoons of citric acid
  • 2. In a separate bowl, mix the wet ingredients together (dehydrated milk, essential oils, honey).
  • 1 tablespoon dehydrated milk
  • 3. Slowly add the liquid ingredients to the dry, one tablespoon at a time. Watch to make sure there's no foaming (that means the citric acid has activated and the bomb won't work).
  • 1 tablespoon of milled oat flakes
  • 4. When completely mixed, add them to the molds quickly before the mixture becomes too dry to shape.
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • 5. Wait overnight (24 hours is better) to dry completely before using.
  • 10-20 drops frankincense essential oil*
  • 6. Use within 6 months. Store in airtight container.
    Feel free to decorate these with extra oat flakes when pressing into the mold. The charcoal will leave a ring around your tub but it's nothing a short cleaning won't fix. 

    *If you dislike frankincense, use another essential oil. Frankincense has wonderful skin healing properties but so does lavender, geranium, rose and tea tree.

    Relaxing Tea Time Bath Bomb

    Unwind with a simple bath bomb using favorite nighttime tea. Chamomile and lavender both have skin and hair health properties and the scents will soothe and relax you. Inspired by the eHow recipe.

    Tea Time

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  • 1 cup cream of tartar
  • 2. Slowly add the liquid ingredients to the dry, 1 tablespoon at a time until fully mixed.
  • 6 tablespoons Dead Sea Salt or Epsom salt
  • 3. Add to molds or shape quickly before it dries.
  • 4 tablespoons lavender tea
  • 4. Allow to dry for 24 hours before using.
  • 4 tablespoons of chamomile tea
  • 5. Use within 6 months. Store in airtight container.
  • 10-20 drops lavender essential oil
  • 8 tablespoons of coconut or olive oil

  • For extra decoration, pour a little tea into the mold before your press the mixture in. When it pops out, it'll be decorated with lovely tea leaves.

    Hidden Bath Charcoal Bomb

    If you like a little surprise in your bomb, these are a fun way to keep the bath exciting while taking care of your skin. Activated charcoal is popular for skincare and acne treatment. Plus, it looks eerie and cool in a bathtub. I got the recipe from The Makeup Dummy, who added rose petals to the design for a gothic-feeling soak.

    Hidden Charcoal Surprise

    Mini Black Bomb IngredientsBigger Bomb IngredientsDirections
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1. Combine all dry ingredients of mini black bomb together.
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/8 cup citric acid
  • 2. Dilute food coloring in oil (optional). Slowly add oil to dry ingredients one tablespoon at a time until well mixed.
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/8 cup cornstach
  • 3. In a separate bowl, combine dry ingredients for the bigger bomb.
  • Optional - black soap/food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel or water in spray bottle
  • 4. Mix dry ingredients while you spray with witch hazel or water until mixture clumps together and is able to shape.
  • 1 teaspoon almond or coconut oil
  • 5. Pack mixture into mold, leaving room in the center.
  • 12 activated charcoal capsules
  • 6. Form mini black bomb mixture into ball with hands and add to center of the mold, then cover with the other mixture. For it to float, it should be evenly covered on all sides.
  • Essential oil of choice
  • 7. Let dry 24 hours before use. Store in airtight container.

    Gym Recovery Bath Bomb

    There's something amazing about hot water on sore muscles and baths are a great way to soothe workout injuries and bounce you back for a better performance. This recipes utilizes the best remedies for sore muscles like arnica oil, Epsom salt and bentonite clay so you can feel better about spending time soaking.     Gym Recovery

  • 4 oz baking soda
  • 1. Mix together dry ingredients.
  • 4 oz citric acid
  • 2. Slowly add in wet ingredients until it's the texture of wet sand. Add more oil if too dry. More baking soda if too wet.
  • 8 oz Mineral or Epsom salt
  • 3. Press firmly into mold.
  • 1 tablespoon bentonite clay
  • 4. Place in freeze to harden.
  • 4-5 tablespoons oil of choice (jojoba, apricot, sweet almond, etc.)
  • After using bath bomb, pat skin skin to retain oil on skin.
  • 3 tablespoons distilled arnica oil*
  • 15 drops essential oil of choice

  • Bergamot essential oil mixes well with arnica and was used in the original recipe but I'm always a fan of eucalyptus myself. 

    *Arnica oil can be toxic so make sure to use a body or massage oil that's been distilled in another oil.

    Shower Scents Bath Bomb

    We can't always get a bath in but sometimes we could still use the relief of one. And come on, not all of us have a very comfortable bathtub (or one at all). This little shower bomb releases a wonderful scent into the steam of your shower so at least you can enjoy some aromatherapy while you race to get ready for work. Eucalyptus and peppermint are great for opening the sinuses if you've got allergies or fighting off a cold. Add lavender or something soothing to wind down for the night. Or if you like a morning shower, I recommend grapefruit or citrus scents to perk up your energy levels.  Thanks to Life Currents for the recipe.

    Shower Scents

  • 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup water
  • 1. Mix water and add essential oils together in a bowl. Mix into bowl of baking soda until you get a dry, thick paste. If it's too dry, add more water (up to 1/3 cup).
  • 3-6 drops essential oils
  • 2. Pack into mold or foam into shape with hands.
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 3. Let dry completely overnight or a full 12 hours before use.
    4. Place in shower to use. Use within 2 weeks. Store in airtight container.
