Holistic and alternative health remedies were a major part of "The Dr. Oz Show" this week. Dr. Mehmet Oz focused on getting back to the basics and identifying key imbalances in the body that could be affecting your health.

As always, Dr. Oz doesn't endorse any particular brand of supplement. In accordance with that policy, we examine his health advice and look for products that best match his suggestions. Here are the five supplements we think should be on your radar this week:

Oz Recommendation One: Balance Your Hormones
Dr. Oz welcomed Dr. Natasha Turner to the show to explain how hormonal imbalances can lead you to store fat in various parts of the body that can be difficult to lose, like the belly, thighs and bottom. They recommended examining your symptoms carefully to determine what imbalances you may have and adjusting them through diet and exercise to achieve a healthy weight. Your doctor can help you with this through blood tests.

Youthful You DHEA 5 mgOUR PICK: Youthful You DHEA 5 mg from Enzymatic Therapy -- 60 Caps for $5.20
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands which regulates the amount of fat and muscle mass within the body. Since this hormone decreases with age, you can put on more fat that can be difficult to lose. If your doctor determines you're deficient in DHEA, Dr. Oz recommended beginning with 5 mg a day, not to exceed 25 mg. This supplement offers exactly 5 mg per serving and again, your doctor can help you determine the best dosage for your needs.

Oz Recommendation Two: Probiotics
As part of Dr. Oz's three-day detox program, he recommended adding a probiotic supplement, taken in the morning. Probiotics are "good bacteria" that balance out the "bad bacteria" found within the gut. They help the body break down and digest food properly, so you get the maximum nutritional benefit without uncomfortable digestive issues. Probiotics also support a healthy immune system.

PB 8 Pro-Biotic AcidophilusOUR PICK: PB 8 Pro-Biotic Acidophilus from Nutrition Now -- 60 VCaps for $8.99 or 120 VCaps for $14.99
Each capsule provides 14 million good bacteria from eight different strains of probiotics, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, to regulate the digestive system and relieve symptoms of indigestion like frequent bloating, diarrhea, constipation and gas. Best of all, this probiotic supplement is shelf stable, so you don't have to keep it in the fridge. Used daily, it can get your digestive system back on track while strengthening the immune system.

Oz Recommendation Three: Multivitamin
While you should never use a multivitamin as a crutch for a poor diet, Dr. Oz recommends one to make sure you're getting all the vitamins and minerals you need daily. Also part of his detox program, a multivitamin can contribute to your overall health long after the detox ends. Look for one that contains 100 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of the 12 essential vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin Code Perfect WeightOUR PICK: Vitamin Code Perfect Weight from Garden of Life -- 120 VCaps for $31.66 or 240 VCaps for $54.04
Not only does this amazing multivitamin provide 100 percent of 16 essential nutrients, it also helps control stress to prevent eating as a coping mechanism. A great tool to help you manage your weight. This supplement also contains an antioxidant, immune and metabolism blend of herbs including green tea extract and ashwagandha root, along with RAW enzymes for optimal digestion. Since this multivitamin is produced from whole foods, it can be taken with meals or without.

Dr. Oz welcomed back holistic health expert Dr. Andrew Weil this week to unveil his new "essentials." He spoke about diet and lifestyle changes as well as supplements that can make a big different in your health.

Weil Recommendation One: Iodine
This mineral plays a role in everything from blood cell production to body temperature. Without enough iodine, you may start losing your hair, gaining weight or experiencing digestive problems. As Dr. Weil explained, an enlarged thyroid gland is an easy way to detect a deficiency. If your doctor determines you're in need of more iodine, a kelp supplement is a great way to go, since kelp contains about 2,500 mcg of iodine per gram. Aim for 150 mcg daily.

Kelp 150 mcgOUR PICK: Kelp 150 mcg from Nature's Plus -- 300 Tabs for $6.23
Get the exact amount of iodine recommended by Dr. Weil with this product from Nature's Plus. Produced directly from kelp, a type of leafy, brown algae, this once-daily supplement can replenish an iodine deficiency and support proper thyroid function. Balancing the thyroid can help you better control your weight and relieve feelings of fatigue. Just take one tablet daily with a meal to get all the amazing benefits of iodine. Avoiding processed foods, which are often stripped of iodine, will also help.

Weil Recommendation Two: Prickly Pear
Dr. Weil and his personal physician, Dr. Tierona Low Dog, recommended prickly pear as a way to combat frequent fatigue. Prickly pear is often recommended because it helps stabilize blood sugar levels, preventing the dips and spikes that can rev us up and then deplete us of energy. It's also rich in magnesium and vitamin C for a healthy heart, kidneys and immune system, as well as energy. You drink the fruit of the juice or try a supplement to get the benefits of the prickly pear.

Prickly Pear 500 mgOUR PICKPrickly Pear 500 mg from Solaray -- 100 VCaps for $7.74
If you're interested in a different alternative to drinking the juice, you can try a supplement, like this one, from Solaray. This product is produced from the nopal cactus and contains 500 mg of prickly pear extract per capsule. Native to Mexico, the prickly pear can help you feel more energized throughout the day while also supporting a healthy digestive system. You can take it up to three times a day to keep blood sugar levels stable and your energy up.
