This week on "The Dr. Oz Show," Dr. Mehmet Oz discussed ways to help you look younger and feel your best, no matter what your age. He gave alternatives to sugary energy drinks and addressed common aging issues like menopause symptoms and varicose veins.
If you haven't been tuning in all week, here are the five supplements Dr. Oz wants you to learn more about:
This supplement has been a favorite of herbalists in China for centuries for its adaptogenic properties. Astragalus supports the white blood cells to strengthen the immune system while helping the body fight off free radicals that can damage cells and lead to illness. This supplement also helps boost energy and fight the effects of stress and fatigue. Dr. Oz recommended 200 mg of astragalus twice a day to help women ages 40 and older feel more alert, energized and better able to focus throughout the day without the harsh side effects of stimulants.
Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-essential amino acid that has a mild tranquilizer effect on the body. When ingested, it can help you feel more calm, reducing stress and anxiety and allowing you to relax. Dr. Oz recommended looking for an anti-aging cream with this ingredient in it. When applied topically, GABA helps to relax the fine muscles under the skin in the areas where wrinkles commonly develop, particularly around the eyes, to make wrinkles less noticeable. You can also take it in supplement form to counteract the chronic stress associated with getting older.
3. Horse Chestnut Seed
If you suffer from painful, unsightly varicose veins, horse chestnut seed extract is the supplement for you. According to Dr. Oz, this herbal extract strengthens the walls of the veins to prevent the collection of fluid, which lowers swelling and inflammation. Taken regularly, this supplement helps improve circulation and the appearance of varicose veins, you just have to be patient. You can either drink the supplement by adding about 10 drops of a liquid extract to water or you can take 300 mg a day in capsule form to see the benefits he spoke of.
Glutamine is an amino acid that's a popular choice among athletes. This amino acid helps boost energy levels for greater endurance whether you're practicing a physical activity, like exercising, or just trying to get through a busy day. Glutamine also supports the health of the colon and keeps the immune system strong to fight off bacterial and viral infections. Lastly, glutamine promotes muscle recovery, repairing damage caused by exercise or strain. Dr. Oz recommended adding 500 mg of glutamine to a smoothie to help get you moving the healthy, natural way.
5. Progesterone Cream
Women suffering from symptoms of menopause like hot flashes, mood swings and decreased libido can benefit from these topical hormone replacement creams. Progesterone is often referred to as the "forgotten" hormone, even though your body's supply of it starts depleting before estrogen. Dr. Oz recommended progesterone cream to put hormone levels back in balance to help you feel better and keep the sizzle in your sex life. Progesterone cream can be applied to various parts of the body, such as the upper inner arms and chest. Follow application instructions carefully for the best results.
