Time again to end the week with a look back at "The Dr. Oz Show." This week was all about blasting body fat in stubborn areas with natural weight loss supplements and learning about alternative treatments for common health issues to prevent them from causing more serious problems later on.
In case you weren't able to tune in all week, here are the top five supplements the doctor thought should be on your radar:
1. Green Coffee Bean Extract
Green coffee beans haven't been roasted, leaving higher levels of chlorogenic acid, which slows the absorption of glucose and prevents fat from building up in the body. Dr. Oz recommended 800 mg of green coffee bean extract twice a day for best results. You should take this supplement about 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner. Look for a product that has pure green coffee bean extract without binders or fillers. Most of these supplements come in capsule form, which can be opened, adding the contents to water or juice if you prefer not to ingest the capsule. Participants in published studies lost about 10 percent of their body weight (on average) without any additional lifestyle changes.
2. Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA)
Dr. Oz explained one of the most common reasons women have extra weight in the belly area is because of stress. Your body is producing fight-or-flight hormones in response to the stress, which tells your body to batten down the hatches and hang onto the extra fat in case you need the energy later on. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid which is said to have a "calming" effect on the fat cells of the body, telling them to release their fat stores so your body can burn them off. Dr. Oz recommended 1,000 mg before every meal for one week to help reduce extra fat stored in the abdomen.
Dr. Oz recommended chitosan as a weight loss solution for anyone with a large bottom. Chitosan is produced from the exoskeleton of shellfish. It can be taken as a dietary fiber to keep the body from absorbing fats through the intestinal wall and storing them, leading to weight gain. Dr. Oz recommended combining it with whey protein to make a smoothie. The whey protein contains amino acids to help you burn fat and build lean muscle mass. This combination prevents the accumulation of more fat for a smaller bottom. Try drinking the smoothie twice a day for one week.
Dr. Oz recommended calcium pyruvate for anyone with stubborn fat in the thighs. Pyruvic acid occurs naturally in the body, and its function is actually to convert sugar and starches into energy to prevent them from being stored throughout the body as fat. When you take in more than your body produces naturally, you can burn fat. Pyruvic acid has also been credited with boosting metabolism. The calcium added to the pyruvic acid helps to target the weight loss to the thigh area. Dr. Oz recommended 1,000 mg before each meal for optimal results.
This supplement was recommended by guest Dr. Joe Mercola to help cleanse the body of mercury, which is contained in certain types of fish and can collect in the body. Chlorella, which is a freshwater algae, binds with toxins and other harmful substances in the body, such as heavy metals, to help remove them naturally. Start with 50 mg once or twice a day to see how well you tolerate it, as some people can experience symptoms of indigestion. Taking chlorella daily promotes healthy detoxification and it's also rich in vitamins, minerals and protein as well as chlorophyll.
