Love is in the air today and with it obviously comes a certain bit of romance. With Valentine's Day upon us the rush to find a perfect gift for your significant other (before they realize you completely forgot) is on. You had a great plan, but you were busy and everything sort of fell through. Lucky for you, your saving grace may not cost a great deal.
An aphrodisiac may be all your partner needs to forget about why they were mad and head straight to the bedroom. While nothing below is going to be better than, say, a diamond engagement ring, they're a great way to keep yourself clear of the doghouse.
Food and Ingredients
Ah, the Valentine's Day meal. What's going to set the mood? If you want to intrigue your partner as soon as he or she sits down for a meal, try including these ingredients in your dish. (Warning -- We cannot be held responsible for the outcome if you try to include every one of these ingredients in one dish.)
Dark Chocolate -- When consumed, chocolate releases three compounds: serotonin, theobromine and phenylethylamine (PEA). Serotonin plays an important part in the regulation of learning, mood, sleep and vasoconstriction (constriction of blood vessels). Theobromine is related to caffeine and acts as a mild stimulant. PEA is said to help induce feelings of excitement, attraction and euphoria.
Oysters -- Oysters contain a fair amount of zinc which controls the libido-altering progesterone levels and can stave off impotence.
Avocado -- One look at the avocado and you can understand why this regrettable was banned by Catholic priests in Spain for being sexually explicit. In terms of working as an aphrodisiac, avocado is full of vitamin E which helps your body produce hormones such as testosterone, estrogen and progesterone.
Honey -- Honey is a great source of boron, a trace mineral the body uses to metabolize estrogen, the female sex hormone. Recent studies have also shown boron may boost testosterone levels in the blood by producing the B vitamins needed for its creation.
Red Wine -- Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol which helps boost blood flow and improves circulation before and during intercourse.
Nothing says relaxation more then a massage. If you want to give your partner true pleasure, try adding one of these oils to your Valentine's Day ritual:
Arnica -- Arnica provides immediate warmth and relief to tired, overworked muscles. This helps put your partner at ease.
Jasmine -- Used in many massage oils, jasmine is said to induce euphoria.
Ylang ylang -- The oil of this Indonesian root increases libido and energy between lovers and is considered one of the more powerful aphrodisiac scents.
Vanilla -- Vanilla mildly stimulates nerves, which makes sexual sensations even better.
Sandalwood -- The extract of sandalwood tree bark heightens sexual excitement by simulating the parasympathetic nervous system, which is dominant during sexual arousal.
Lavender -- The scent of lavender helps calm the mind and ease stress.
If you want to really turn up the intensity, try one of these herbs. They're proven to last longer and will make your night magical:
Ginseng -- Ginseng loosely translates to "man root" and increases blood flow to counteract erectile dysfunction.
Garlic -- Garlic is chockfull of allicin, which will increase blood flow (you can take a supplement if you don't want to eat it).
Yohimbe -- This supplement boosts energy and stamina in men for longer-lasting sexual performance.
Ginger -- Ginger both nourishes skin and improves blood circulation. Spicy and warm aromas increase perspiration, which then leads to heightened chemicals leading to sexual attraction.
Saw Palmetto -- Some studies link saw palmetto berries to an increase in female chest size.
Dong Quai -- If you or your partner are suffering from a hormonal imbalance or PMS, Dong Quai helps regulate these problems and improve your sex life.
Horny Goat Weed - This oddly named herbal extract helps to maintain proper hormone levels to promote sexual wellness and improve sexual performance.
