My favorite color is green. So is my favorite natural supplement: Spirulina. And after I explain why I love this supplement, you might be singing the praises of green yourself.
In my years of taking supplements there's been times when I lost the "vitamin kick" for whatever reason -- didn't like the taste, too much trouble to remember, vitamins getting stuck in my throat and so on. There is, however, one supplement that I'd never do without and that supplement is spirulina - a tiny, microscopic organism that cannot be seen with the naked eye. It’s a blue-green algae that colonizes in lakes throughout tropical areas of the world. Here’s why I love this little green miracle of nature:
It's small and easy to swallow.
It's a great source of amino acids (in case I don’t get enough protein in a day).
It contains GLA for inflammation.
It's loaded with carotenoids for my eyes.
It helps to control histamine during my allergy season.
And the coup de grâce - it helps to cleanse and rid my body of toxins.
Because it's loaded with so many good properties, I'd feel guilty if I missed a dose. Even though the smell is a bit seaweedy, it reminds me of the ocean where I yearn to be. In doing some research on spirulina, I discovered that it also lowers your bad cholesterol (LDL) and helps to increase the good stuff (HDL). Just make sure to buy it from a reputable manufacturer for purity insurance.
I admit that spirulina does not benefit everyone. I once convinced a doubting friend that this was the greatest stuff ever. She took it for a while and developed a skin rash! So before taking it, make sure you don't have an allergy. Read the ingredients list on the side of the supplement and take into account any food or environmental allergies you may have.
