One of the great most recognized holiday past times is the creation of Easter eggs. Whether they're dyed, painted or even colored with crayons, Easter eggs present a bonding opportunity for many families.

Changing Times

However, some controversy has developed over the traditional artificial dyes many use to color their eggs. While artificial dyes may be cheaper, brighter and more stable they've, been linked to allergic reactions and hyperactivity in children.

Studies have recently begun to show these dyes may not be as safe as originally anticipated. A study published in Food and Chemical Toxicology found a certain blue dye commonly found in suckers has the ability to enter the blood stream through saliva. A different study conducted in Slovakia went as far as to say blue dye may actually inhibit cellular respiration.

Following in the foot steps of two North Carolina women who, earlier this month, petitioned Kraft Foods to remove Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 from their popular Macaroni & Cheese, many parents are looking for a natural solution to color their Easter eggs.

Creating Natural Dyes

If you want to create your very own Easter egg dye. Just combine the following ingredients in a cup of boiling water with one teaspoon of vinegar to create the desired color. Keep in mind the egg will become a slightly lighter version of the dye.  Some dyes may require straining before dipping in eggs.

  • Red -- Cherry juice, pomegranate juice beets, raspberries or red grape juice
  • Orange -- Chili powder or paprika
  • Yellow -- Orange or lemon peels, carrot tops or green tea
  • Green -- Spinach leaves or liquid chlorophyll
  • Blue -- Canned blueberries or a larger amount of grape juice
  • Indigo -- Red wine, red onion skins or red cabbage leaves
  • Violet -- Small amount of grape juice or violet blossoms

Packing It All Up

And what to do those Easter eggs go in? Why an Easter basket of course. If you're looking for a healthier alternative to the candy which won't cause your child to throw it back at you, there are alternatives. Try giving them something healthy or that will get them active. A few examples include:

  • Vegetable, fruit or herb seeds packets
  • Bubbles (use eco-friendly soap)
  • A water bottle
  • Tennis balls or other sports equipment
  • Fresh berries (if you must give them chocolate, try fruit dipped in dark chocolate, which has antioxidants)
  • Natural fruit snacks
  • Make your own peanut butter eggs with almond butter (high in fiber, iron and vitamin E)
  • Carrots (you can play off the Easter bunny theme)
  • Healthy granola bars
