42 MegaFood Products Now Non-GMO Project Verified

Committed to non-GMO ingredients from the start, MegaFood now has the Non-GMO Project. Learn more at eVitamins, the largest online health Australia superstore.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be found throughout today's supermarkets. These foods have been genetically altered to improve size, texture, taste, resistance to the elements and parasites and more. However, the jury is still out on whether or not long-term consumption of genetically modified foods is harmful to our health.

For that reason and others, companies like MegaFood are determined to manufacture products using only non-GMO ingredients, so customers know exactly what they're getting. With dozens more verifications from the Non-GMO Project, MegaFood is expanding its list of certified non-GMO supplements.

What Is The Non-GMO Project?
The Non-GMO Project is a nonprofit, third-party organization that began 2005 when two food and health product retailers decided to team up for a shared cause.

In 2001 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, The Big Carrot Natural Food Market implemented a ban on product lines that couldn't be verified as non-GMO -- they simply pulled the products from their shelves. However, they were relying on the statements and researchers of the manufacturers themselves to prove non-GMO status.

In 2003, employees at the U.S. health food store The Natural Grocery Co. in Berkley, California, were trying their best to address the questions and pleas of concerned customers about GMOs. The store's employees wanted to make sure they could answer their customers' questions properly about GMOs so they could make more informed choices, so they teamed up with more than 150 other stores and co-ops to pressure U.S. companies to disclose their use of GMOs.

The two stores joined forces in 2005 with the goal of establishing a standard for all of North America to determine whether or not a food or product is in fact non-GMO. To do this, they enlisted the help of the Global ID Group, the top organization in the country for non-GMO testing and certification. And so the Non-GMO Project was officially launched.

MegaFood's Non-GMO Mission
Based in New Hampshire, MegaFood has been creating non-GMO products according to European standards for the past five years. However, they also sought the verification seal of the Non-GMO Project to show North American customers their commitment to avoiding GMOs. This process involved working with the Non-GMO Project as well as all the farmers in their supply chain to make sure every ingredient they sourced was compliant.

In February of this year, they were able to add 37 products to their list of Non-GMO Project Verified supplements, bringing their total to 42 (the first five were given the seal last June). These are the MegaFood products eVitamins carries that are certified non-GMO by the Non-GMO Project:

MegaFood's production facility, FreshState, where all their supplements are made, has also been verified to be compliant with non-GMO standards.

A New Partnership
To further this mission and provide even more non-GMO supplements, MegaFood recently partnered with Uncle Matt's Organic. Based in Florida, Uncle Matt's Organic is the first organic orange juice company in the United States. They'll be supplying fresh, organic and in-season Navel and Hamlin oranges to MegaFood for their vitamin C supplements. These oranges are non-GMO and haven't been exposed to chemicals like herbicides and pesticides.
