This week on "The Dr. Oz Show," it was all about going back to the source of the problem and treating it naturally. Dr. Mehmet Oz emphasized a great night's sleep and explained how to get it with natural remedies. Dr. Oz also took the time to address common skin ailments and how to treat them the holistic way. It's all about being good to your body to look and feel your best.

1. Calcium and Magnesium
This combination is a winner for anyone who can't seem to fall asleep and stay asleep. Calcium and magnesium are both essential minerals that benefit the central nervous system. Taken together, they can help you calm down and reduce anxiety that could be keeping you awake at night. Dr. Oz reported that a deficiency in magnesium in particular showed links to insomnia and restless leg syndrome. While calcium and magnesium combination supplements are common, if you're not taking one, start with 600 mg of calcium and 400 mg of magnesium daily to see if it helps.
2. Passionflower Tea and Valerian Root Tea
These herbs are praised for their benefits on mental health. Passionflower helps to reduce anxiety which can be crippling both day and night while valerian has a mildly sedative effect, which helps gently lull you to sleep and keep you asleep. Valerian root is a common natural sleep aid, taken either on its own or in combination with other ingredients. Dr. Oz suggested drinking a tea containing both herbs one hour before bedtime. By shutting off your mind, you can give your body the chance to recover from the day, which it so desperately needs at night.
Wrinkles are a common part of the aging process and the quest to prevent and eliminate them is a billion-dollar industry. Of all the innovations that have come out of that research, retinol has been one of the most effective and is now readily available. A derivative of vitamin A, retinol can be found in creams, lotions and serums. Applied regularly to the skin, it can help boost collagen production to smooth lines, make pores appear smaller and give the skin a more youthful appearance. Retinol (and vitamin A as a whole) has also been shown to improve acne and prevent future breakouts.
This mineral is essential in collagen production, which is a fibrous protein that makes up the structure of skin. Without collagen, skin loses its elasticity and can sag and wrinkle. Zinc also helps to repair damaged tissues and facilitate wound healing. In addition to the skin, zinc is beneficial to brain and eye health. Make sure it's included in your daily multivitamin, or try it in supplement form. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for zinc is 11 mg for men and 8 mg for women 19 years and older. You can also find zinc in dairy products, nuts and whole grains.
5. Vitamin E
Cold sores are not only an unsightly skin condition, they're also painful. Cold sores can be brought on by stress and pop up on the lips and along the edges of the mouth. This essential vitamin can help you relieve cold sores and heal them properly because vitamin E supports healthy tissues throughout entire body. When applied topically in oil form, vitamin E helps to soothe the area and heal the damaged tissues. You can buy vitamin E oil in liquid form or as a softgel, which you can open to apply the oil directly to the skin. Dr. Oz also recommended avoiding citrus fruits while cold sores heal to prevent irritation.
