In order to lose weight, you have to burn off the fat stored within the body sitting on top of the muscle. This will help you lose inches and develop a lean, defined physique. Supplements are a popular way to assist your weight loss efforts and there are many to choose from.
Calcium pyruvate has been getting some attention as a weight loss aid, but how does it work?
What Is Calcium Pyruvate?
The body naturally produces pyruvic acid when glucose (sugars) are broken down. You can find pyruvic acid combined with calcium in supplement form, known as calcium pyruvate. Supplements are available in various strengths to meet desired results.
Calcium Pyruvate for Weight Loss
Calcium pyruvate is said to aid in weight loss by encouraging the breakdown of fat so it can be removed from the body -- this prevents it from being stored in the body, resulting in weight gain. Fat is often stored within the body to be used for energy later on, but a diet high in fat and lack of exercise can lead to adverse effects.
To date, there aren't many studies about calcium pyruvate for weight loss and the results are mixed as to whether it works to help you lose weight on its own. Dr. Mehmet Oz discussed it on "The Dr. Oz Show" back in April 2012 as a supplement meant to help you burn fat in the thighs. He recommended taking 1,000 mg of calcium pyruvate before each meal for one week. (Editor's Note: Dr. Oz is in no way affiliated with eVitamins and doesn't endorse any specific products or brands). However, a 2005 study published in the medical journal Nutrition found 30 days of supplementation with just calcium pyruvate didn't produce any changes in body composition or performance during exercise.
The most promising research is from a 1999 study of football players published in the International journal of sports nutrition, which found five weeks of supplementation with calcium pyruvate along with creatine (an amino acid) did improve strength and body composition.
Calcium pyruvate has shown the potential to enhance weight loss efforts, but only when combined with other efforts or supplements. As always, weight loss supplements are meant to support the effects of regular exercise and eating a balanced diet. Here are some additional tips for weight loss success:
Get plenty of sleep.
Drink lots of water.
Don't eat heavily within two hours of going to bed.
Make sure your meals contain plenty of protein, whole grains, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables.
Get 30 minutes of cardio daily.
Include two or three strength training sessions per week.
Stretch before and after exercise.
If you're interested in how calcium pyruvate could benefit you, speak to your doctor first, especially if you have a medical condition. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding shouldn't take calcium pyruvate. You shouldn't take a calcium pyruvate supplement for longer than six weeks.
