Green coffee bean extract has exploded onto the weight loss market ever since it first made headlines and appeared on "The Dr. Oz Show" in March. When the show returned in September for the fourth season, Dr. Mehmet Oz spoke again about green coffee bean extract for weight loss. He encouraged viewers to look for the words "Svetol" or "GCA" on the nutrition label to know you're getting the best one. But he didn't really say why.

Many of our customers have called with questions like "How are these products different?" or "Are the results different?" So we did a little digging.

What Green Coffee Extract Does
Green coffee beans are simply unroasted coffee beans. By not roasting the beans, you keep their levels of chlorogenic acid intact. Chlorogenic acid has been shown to inhibit glucose formation in the liver, speed up the metabolism and slow fat absorption for weight loss. A study published in the medical journal Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity caught the attention of the news media, stating that participants lost an average of 10 percent of their total body weight, or about 18 pounds in just 12 weeks on the supplement.

And so the craze began.

How is Svetol or GCA different?
Svetol or GCA are the names for the patented green coffee bean extract developed by Naturex, a maker of ingredients for cosmetics, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, foods and beverages based in Avignon, France. Produced from the Robusta variety of coffee beans, this extract provides 50 to 55 percent polyphenols and 45 to 50 percent chlorogenic acid per serving, according to Naturex. The company follows a traditional extraction process to keep the nutrient profile of the beans intact while removing caffeine.

This extract has no reported side effects and is made with only non-GMO coffee beans and is free of allergens, pesticides, heavy metals and contaminants like aflatoxins or ochratoxin A. The chlorogenic acid in this particular extract was found to be highly bioavailable in humans, according to a 2008 study published in the Journal of Nutrition. This means they're well absorbed from the intestines, which could make them more effective.

We weren't able to find any research to indicate this patented extract was more effective in promoting weight loss than others, but increased bioavailability is known to improve the usefulness of the extract by the body and its effects.

Who has it?
If you're interested in trying green coffee supplements with the patented ingredient, you're in luck. Here are two great options that both contain Svetol, or GCA green coffee extract:

Green Coffee Extract 500 mg1. Source Naturals: Green Coffee Extract 500 mg -- 30 Tabs for $8.63 or 60 Tabs for $16.19
Each one-tablet  serving of this supplement from Source Naturals provides 500 mg of extract to help you shed the weight. You can take it up to four times a day to help you reach your weight loss goals. It's important to note that this product is available in tablet form, which means it will have extract ingredients used in the tableting process, such as cellulose and magnesium stearate, which give the tablet its shape. These ingredients have no known impact on the efficacy of the extract.

Pure Green Coffee Bean 800 mg2. Bio Nutrition: Pure Green Coffee Bean 800 mg -- 50 Caps for $14.98
This product from Bio Nutrition provides 800 mg of green coffee bean extract and 50 percent chlorogenic acid per capsule. Their version is also without any binders or fillers and comes in a gelatin capsule. The capsule can be opened and the contents added to a beverage and the capsule discarded, if you choose not to consume gelatin. It contains no added stimulants, to avoid unpleasant side effects. Just take one capsule 30 minutes prior to your two heaviest meals of the day.

The lesson here is to do your research when buying any type of supplement. Especially when ingredients have the symbol for a patent next to them -- know where they come from and how they could affect you. If you still have questions, we're always here to help at eVitamins, where you can find these green coffee bean supplements and more.
