What Is a Headache? Know Your Type for Relief

Do you know what type of headache you suffer from the most?

We've all had a headache. Whether it lingers like a dull pain or pressure or seems to pierce your cranium out of nowhere, headaches can hold you back both during your day and at night when you're trying to rest.

On the December 3 episode of "The Dr. Oz Show," Dr. Mehmet Oz discussed the different types of headaches we suffer from and what to do about each type to end the painful cycle. The symptoms may sound familiar, but the treatments may be more surprising.

Types of Headaches
On the show, Dr. Oz explained three distinct types of headaches -- tension, migraine and cluster headaches -- but there are others. These types of headaches are most common:

  1. Tension: Dr. Oz explained it as feeling similar to a headband being wrapped too tightly around the head. These headaches can also resonate in the neck and shoulders.
  2. Migraine: A migraine can be physically debilitating for up to three days and is usually located in the temple or one part of the head. These headaches are normally accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and sound and dizziness.
  3. Cluster: If you experience sharp, searing pain, usually behind one eye, you may be experiencing a cluster headache. They're usually shorter, about 30 minutes to one hour, but return, perhaps on a nightly basis.
  4. Sinus: Characterized by pressure and pain in the forehead and cheeks, or behind the nose, this headache is the result of inflamed sinuses due to infection or allergic reaction, both of which cause increased mucus production and pain.
  5. Ocular Migraine: This headache causes vision loss, either during or immediately after a migraine headache. This vision loss is temporary, usually lasting less than 60 minutes.

Does one of these sound like you? Read on to find out what may be causing it and what you can do about it.

Common Headache Triggers
These different types of headaches can be caused by many different triggers, as explained on the show. Adjusting your routine can be key to preventing frequent headaches. Some triggers discussed on the show today include:

  • Stress, either physical, emotional or mental (tension headache)
  • Muscle spasms in the neck, shoulders or on the head (tension headache)
  • Changes in your daily schedule like meals or bedtime (migraine headache)
  • Eating aged or fermented foods (migraine headache)
  • Seasonal changes in temperature, allergens and air pressure (migraine, sinus or cluster headache)

Keeping a journal of your headaches can be beneficial to determining what kind you have and the best way to treat it. Be sure to note when it started (date and time), what you were doing when it started, location of the pain, intensity of the pain and the duration. You can also write down anything you tried to treat it that did or didn't help. You can take your journal to your doctor, to determine the best treatment plan or if a greater cause is to blame.

Natural Treatments for Headaches
Dr. Oz certainly acknowledged that popular over-the-counter (OTC) medications like ibuprofen and naproxen can help for a tension headache while prescriptions may be needed for migraine and cluster headaches, but you can support these treatments with holistic remedies as well:

  • Peppermint Oil -- Massage gently onto the temples for pain relief.
  • Magnesium -- If you suffer from migraine headaches on a regular basis, you may be magnesium deficient. Adding more magnesium to your diet (between 200 and 600 mg) can help prevent migraines.
  • Valerian Root Tea -- If a headache is keeping you awake and putting the breaks on your day, drinking some of this tea with calm and relax you.
  • Capsaicin Spray -- This peppery shot can help those with the extreme pain of cluster headaches find fast relief.

It may take some experimenting before you determine the right treatments for you. Speak with your doctor before trying any new supplements, as these can affect certain prescription and OTC medications. Staying hydrated, getting enough sleep and eating a well balanced diet can also reduce the frequency and severity of your headaches.
