Make the Coffee Swap: New Morning Pick-me-ups

If you're trying to avoid coffee, but still need a little help getting out the door in the morning, here are some new alternatives to your morning joe.

Waking up in the morning can be the hardest part of your day. Sometimes (or maybe always), you just don't have the energy to get moving.

Many people turn to coffee to get them moving, but not everyone is a java lover. Whether it's to save some extra money or for dietary reasons, the coffee-free morning has become a reality and some old standbys are again being hailed for their energizing properties.

Here are some examples of natural pick-me-ups you can try in place of coffee in the morning:
1. Apple -- Apples contain high levels of phytonutrients and can give you a quick burst of energy to begin your day. While it's probably a wise idea to eat more than just an apple for breakfast, the glucose of an apple will give you enough energy to get you through an hour workout or a quick jog. The saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" holds some validity, as apples can actually improve your breathing. A regular diet of apples builds an immunity for your bronchial tubes. This can help you breathe easier throughout the night, leaving you more rested in the morning.
2. Citrus Scents -- If you're into aromatherapy, try using citrus oils to invigorate you in the morning. Many face washes use citrus scents to help give you vitality early in the morning as they stimulate the trigeminal nerve. You could also add an essential oil to your shampoo or conditioner.
3. Water – When you sleep, your body doesn't stop working and its need to be fully hydrated doesn't end. After several hours of sleep, you'll be mildly dehydrated when you wake up. Drinking water is the best thing to get your circulation going, which will help energize you. Don't just drink it down in one gulp though. Try to sip away at your water which gives your body a chance to absorb it instead of it being filtered through your kidneys quickly.
4. Breakfast  -- There's a reason breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day. Your choice of breakfast foods supplies glucose to the brain, preparing it for the day's activities. The glucose is also necessary in the stabilization of blood sugar which, if low, can lead to a fatigued feeling.  Whether you eat a protein-based meal, carbohydrate-based meal or something in between, it's crucial to get something into your system with an hour of waking.
5. Carob -- Carob has a taste similar to chocolate and has the same effects of coffee, but does not possess the caffeine. While coffee causes the formation of acid in the body, carob forms alkalines which help boost your energy levels. Carob also has the benefit of containing three times as much calcium as chocolate to boost bone health.
6. Green or White Tea -- Green tea has less caffeine than coffee and is packed with antioxidants. They aren't oxidized during the brewing process which leads to them containing high levels of theanine, a relaxing amino acid.  In a study conducted in England, people were given doses of theanine throughout the day and were reportedly less tired with increased results on tests of memory and attention.
Contrary to what many believe, caffeine actually has a negative effect on your ability to get up each morning. Caffeine blocks the brain chemical adenosine which accumulates throughout the day. If you're constantly drinking caffeine-laden drinks throughout the day, the adenosine will accumulate to the point where you won't have energy the next morning. You can continue the pattern for a period of time, but you could eventually face adverse health effects.
