Lose Weight, Increase Energy and Fight Aging

Feeling tired? Trying to lose weight or turn back the hands of time? Dr. Mehmet Oz addressed these common concerns this week on The Dr. Oz Show. Find out what types of products he discussed to help you see and feel results.

Dr. Mehmet Oz was busy this week. As we kicked off the holiday season this week, Dr. Oz addressed some of the concerns that will affect many of his viewers as we head into this hectic time of year. From fatigue to wrinkles, he unveiled energy boosters, anti-aging miracles and even a new fat blocker. Whew.

In case you weren't able to jot them all down this week, we've got you covered. Here they are, in no particular order, the most important types of supplements discussed this week on "The Dr. Oz Show":

1. Garcinia Cambogia
Produced from a fruit that resembles a small pumpkin, garcinia cambogia makes a great weight loss supplement because it both fights fat and suppresses the appetite. Also known as tamarind, the rind of this fruit contains hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, which reduces cravings to prevent snacking between meals and overeating during meals while also inhibiting fat absorption by blocking the enzyme citrate lysase. This enzyme would normally turn the carbohydrates you consume into fat, storing it throughout the body. This extract is also known to reduce LDL, or "bad" cholesterol. Aim for no more than 3,000 mg per day, taken in divided doses.

2. Phytoceramides
Wish you could get a facelift, but the pain and price tag make you keep changing your mind? Dr. Oz welcomed plastic surgeons Dr. Shirley Madhere and Dr. Leif Rogers to the show to discuss alternatives to surgery that can help take 10 years off your face. They recommended phytoceramides, the lipids found within plants like sweet potatoes, wheat and rice that are identical to the lipids found in young skin. These ceramides help to hydrate the skin from within, plumping it up to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and helping skin retain moisture. Taken as an oral supplement (aim for 350 mg per day), they can enhance the benefits of topical treatments as well.

3. Bromelain
Finding a way to get rid of cellulite is on every dermatologist's and plastic surgeon's to-do list and nine out of ten women's wish lists. Dr. Oz invited dermatologist Dr. Erin Gilbert on the show to explain how the answer to getting rid of that lumpy backside may not be in a cream or serum, but in the food you eat. She recommended pineapple because of its high concentration of bromelain, a group of enzymes that reduce the inflammation that can contribute to cellulite. It may also promote fat cell metabolism. Bromelain's most highly concentrated in the stem, which you probably don't want to eat, so you can try a daily supplement.

There's one more supplement from last week we thought deserved another mention: pea protein. Dr. Oz recommended this protein powder for women who can't seem to overcome their cravings for carbohydrates and run for ice cream, french fries and donuts when they need a fix. Produced from yellow pea powder, this supplement can help you feel full longer to stop those cravings before you act on them. He suggested combining 2 tbsp of pea protein powder with 1 cup of fruit (your choice), 1 cup of low-fat milk and five ice cubes. Blend and enjoy!

That's all for this week! Shop for supplements like these at eVitamins and we'll see you next Friday with all of the Dr. Oz buzz.
