How to Make Your Own Charcoal Face Mask

Activated charcoal is a popular ingredient in current skincare products and can yield many benefits for your skin. Learn how to make your own charcoal face mask today.

When you think of charcoal, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If you’re like many people, it’s probably an image of burgers on the grill or a slab of ribs being smoked. However, charcoal can provide many surprising benefits for your skin. But before you head out to your grill and slather some charcoal on your face, it’s important to understand the difference between the two types of charcoal. Regular charcoal is what you typically use in cooking and to sketch pictures; activated charcoal is the form that can draw out toxins and chemicals—the type that is suitable for use on your skin. Activated charcoal is often found in capsules, tablets and in powdered form.
As one of the hottest components in skincare products currently, activated charcoal can provide many positive effects for your skin. When combined with other healthy ingredients in a face mask, it acts almost as a magnet, drawing out skin impurities from within your pores like bacteria, oil, dirt, chemicals and other particles. Using activated charcoal masks over a period of time can help improve the tone, texture and overall condition of your skin—encouraging skin that is radiant, smooth and flawless. Activated charcoal masks can also be used to combat acne, help reduce breakouts and remove makeup. Instead of blowing a hefty amount of cash on a product from a high-end skincare or beauty products store, try this do-it-yourself version of a charcoal mask to customize your ingredients and save some of your hard-earned dough.
Note: Before applying these masks to your skin, it is always important to ensure you are not allergic to any of the essential oils or other ingredients. Simply do a spot test on a small area of skin and wait 24 hours to see if an adverse reaction occurs before applying to your entire face.

Ingredients for Normal Skin Mask

Ingredients for Acne-Prone Skin Mask

  • 2 Capsules Activated Charcoal
  • 2 Teaspoons Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1 Squirt Rosewater
  • 1-2 Drops Tea Tree Oil

Before starting, be aware that charcoal is extremely messy and can stain white counters, surfaces and clothing.

  • Step One - Open capsules of activated charcoal and dump into a bowl. Add 2 teaspoons of aloe vera gel, 1 squirt of rosewater and 1-2 drops of lavender or tea tree oil.

  • Step Two - Blend all ingredients thoroughly so the consistency and texture are uniform throughout.

  • Step Three - Apply a thin layer to your face and let dry for 10-20 minutes. Wash off with warm water, and pat your skin dry with a towel.

  • Once you wash the mask off, your skin may have some leftover charcoal on it, so you can try using your favorite cleanser or soap to gently wash away the excess. To amplify the purifying effect of these masks, try steaming your face ahead of time to open up pores and prime them for a deep cleansing.
