Allergy symptoms are no fun, especially for kids. The itchy, red and watery eyes, runny noses and sneezing can make school and activities difficult and getting outside for some sunshine and fun seem impossible.

The following five remedies are some of our favorites for treating allergies in children because they're considered both safe and effective. You can find these herbs on their own or in blends to reduce the symptoms mentioned above that are brought on by seasonal allergies.

1. Echinacea
Echinacea is a popular herbal supplement and a member of the daisy family. can be taken leading up to allergy season as well as during. Taking echinacea daily beginning a couple of weeks before the onset of allergy season may help prevent symptoms. It can also be taken throughout to reduce them.

2. Eyebright
Commonly taken for eye health, eyebright is appropriately named because it helps reduce uncomfortable symptoms like redness, puffiness and dryness or watery eyes. Taking eyebright can support vision for the longterm as well as reduce uncomfortable allergy symptoms.

3. Goldenseal
Functioning similarly to echinacea, goldenseal can help reduce the severity of symptoms or help prevent their onset for a more tolerable allergy season. Goldenseal contains an active compound called berberine, which is said to provide its benefits.

4. Quercetin
A potent antioxidant, quercetin has both anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties that can help reduce symptoms of seasonal allergies in children. Quercetin is a bioflavonoid and taking it may prevent the cells that produce histamine from releasing too much -- histamine is a compound released by the body as part of an inflammatory reaction to an allergen which can cause the physical symptoms associated with an allergic reaction.

5. Vitamin C
In addition to being an immune system supporter, vitamin C's antioxidant benefits help support the tissues of the body, including the mucus membranes. Protecting the mucus membranes helps them stay lubricated and reduce inflammation. Vitamin C may also have antihistamine properties.

It's important to note the herbal supplements mentioned above, particularly echinacea, could cause allergic reactions themselves in children who are sensitive, which is why it's paramount to consult your child'ts physician before adding any new supplements to their routine, especially if they're currently any medications prescribed by their doctor (even over-the-counter products) for their allergies. Don't stop administering your child's medications without the guidance and supervision of their doctor.

More Allergy Relief Tips
You want your little one to feel better as fast as possible so they can get back to their routine and the activities they love. Here are some more ways to make them more comfortable by preventing symptoms during allergy season:

  1. Give your child a bath and change their clothes after playing outside.
  2. Keep windows closed while pollen is heavy in the air to keep it from collecting indoors.
  3. Eye drops and saline nasal rinses can also provide relief.
  4. Make sure your air filter is clean and replace it if necessary.
  5. Have them sip some tea with raw honey (safe for children one year of age and older) to soothe an irritated throat while providing antioxidants.
