Mosquitos and ticks seem to go hand in hand with summer. Their bites can be itchy and uncomfortable, but they can also carry dangerous diseases. Protecting yourself and your family is key, but that doesn't mean spraying on layer after layer of chemicals.
Making Insect Repellant
Creating your own bug repellant is remarkably easy. Once you do it, you'll wonder why you ever tried less natural and more expensive versions.
First of all, pick the essential oil or oils you want to use. Essential oils like eucalyptus, orange, lemongrass, tea tree and of course, citronella, all help naturally repel bugs like mosquitos, ticks and fleas. While you can just use one, you can also combine them. Citronella is the most widely used because of its effectiveness, so we recommend starting with that.
Next, you need to choose a base and there are two routes you can take: oil or alcohol. Olive oil makes an excellent base, serving as a carrier oil for the essential oil(s), which can be very harsh on the skin. Olive oil also contains healthy fats that nourish the skin. Your other option is to use an alcohol, like witch hazel.

Applying Bug Spray Properly
Now that you've made your bug spray, it's important to apply it correctly. Here are some guidelines:
Test bug repellant on a small patch of skin first and wait a few hours to make sure you don't have an adverse reaction.
Spray or coat all visible skin, being mindful of areas like the ears and neck, which can be missed.
Apply bug repellant to clothing as well.
Avoid the eyes and mouth.
Reapply every couple of hours, especially if you're sweating.
Make sure to check yourself thoroughly after coming in from the outdoors to check for suspicious bites or ticks. If you notice anything abnormal, like a bull's eye rash, make sure to have it checked out -- this is a sign of Lyme disease.
