Carefully Caring for Your Baby

Chlorine free diapers and wipes seem to be the latest trend in parenting but is it worth all of the hubbub? Find out more about chlorine free options.

Your baby wears a diaper 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you had to wear something continuously day after day, wouldn’t you want it to be comfortable, non-irritating and most importantly safe?

Many parents have no idea that disposable diapers are made with harmful chemicals, such as sodium hypochlorite, that cause rashes on their baby. Yes, that’s right. The diapers you're buying contribute to his red bottom and many more skin conditions.

These harsh chemicals can cause infection and enter your baby's body through the skin. This can cause further irritation and an uncomfortable situation for your baby. It’s why your baby may scream at diaper changes and wiggle around so bad – a red, blistered and raw butt doesn’t want to be touched never mind rubbed with a wipe.

Want to know more?

  • Reports show dioxins, which is a chemical linked to cancer, have been found in disposable diapers in trace amounts.
  • Disposable diapers have also been found to have Tributyltin (TBT), which could cause hormonal problems.
  • According to Archives of Disease in Childhood, disposable diapers have been found to increase scrotal temperature if worn for a long time. This can cause abnormal spermatogenesis later in life.

Is There Anything You Can Do?

There is something you can do about it. You can provide your baby a much safer, healthier and comfortable diaper – chlorine free. They are just like cloth diapers but they are disposable.

Chlorine free diapers are made from three natural ingredients:

  1. Hemp, corn or wheat
  2. Unbleached cotton
  3. Micro-fleece

The hemp, corn or wheat gives the diapers the absorption they need. The unbleached cotton provides the material of the diaper without the harmful bleach that causes irritation. Finally, the micro-fleece provides the softness your baby deserves.

You might also want to know that natural diapers are free of many irritants such as:

  1. Latex
  2. Perfumes
  3. Dye

The Differences to Expect

Natural or chlorine free diapers are different from the majority of diapers you see in the baby department. Since the cotton is unbleached, you’ll notice that the diapers have a brownish/grey color.

Most people have attributed the stark white color with sanitization and while this can be true, that also means bleach. With diapers, that means your baby has cloth that has been bleached with its residue on his skin all the time.

The “natural” color of chlorine free diapers may not be familiar to you but non-white means bleach free, which means free of harmful chemicals. You can’t deny how much better natural sounds, can you?

Going Back to Cloth Diapers with a Twist

As you look around, you’ll see many people put chlorine disposable diapers on their children. People have been doing it for years. However, if you think back, what were the original diapers of choice? Cloth.

Cloth is natural and it’s what parents have used for centuries. Manufacturers are giving parents an opportunity to go back to cloth but in a much more convenient way - making them disposable.

You now have the chance to cloth diaper your baby without having to deal with pins and laundering dirty diapers. It’s a win-win situation for you and your baby. You continue to be able to simply throw a used diaper away and your baby receives the benefits of comfort, health and safety.
