Can Noni Juice Help Prevent Cancer?

Noni is an exotic fruit that may be able to reduce inflammation and boost immunity. It may also help reduce your cancer risk. In today’s post, learn all the reasons to try it.

Editor's Note: The following post is an examination of the latest research surrounding noni juice. eVitamins doesn't claim any supplement will completely prevent you from developing cancer in your lifetime nor can a single supplement treat or cure cancer.

Noni juice is recommended for overall health and wellness, but there has also been talk about its potential anti-cancer benefits. Does it live up to the hype?

What Is Noni?
Noni (Morinda citrifolia) is a type of evergreen tree native to places like the Pacific Islands, Australia and India. This leaves, bark, fruit, flowers, stems and roots of this small tree are used to make supplements and medicine and it has long been a favorite of Polynesians. The juice of the noni fruit, in particular, has become a popular supplement for wellness. Noni is rich in many nutrients, mainly potassium, a mineral and crucial electrolyte.

Noni Juice for Cancer Prevention Research
Noni juice has been suggested as a potential cancer treatment for its reported ability to support the immune system, which is the body's first line of defense against illness. Strengthening the immune system would enable the body to fight back more aggressively against cancer cells.

A 2012 review of previously published studies in Phytotherapy Research found a particular substance within noni juice (unpasteurized) showed some anti-cancer benefits in humans as well as animals. It's important to note this substance has yet to be identified exactly and that the positive results weren't seen in all studies, or even the majority. But these results do warrant further investigation -- noni juice was shown to improve immune system function and, in a small percentage of studies, kill cancer cells.

As previously stated, this is only the starting point for researching noni juice in relation to cancer. Much more research involving human participants will need to be done in order to identify the exact component(s) within noni juice that supports the immune system and then determine a recommended dosage. At this time, the American Cancer Society doesn't recommend noni juice for cancer prevention or treatment.

What we can say now is noni juice can be consumed as part of a balanced diet to support overall health wellness under the advisement of your physician.

Additional Benefits of Noni Juice
Noni juice has been suggested for several conditions. One of the oldest uses of noni juice is to boost energy. A 2007 study also published in Phytotherapy Research found noni juice did improve endurance as well as balance and flexibility. However, this study was conducted on animals and would need to be further verified with human participants.

The second most common use for noni is to combat inflammation. Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury or illness, which can result in swelling or pain. Noni juice may be able to help regulate that response to prevent uncomfortable symptoms, especially for those with conditions like arthritis.

Noni juice also has antioxidant benefits for the body. Antioxidants counteract the potentially damaging side effects of free radicals which can cause aging in the cells and weaken the immune system. This action is especially beneficial for the vital organs of the body as well as the skin.

Supplement Info
Noni juice and supplements are, at this time, only recommended for short-term use and you can find them in a variety of forms and strengths. It's usually suggested you take noni on an empty stomach.

Consult your doctor before adding a noni supplement to your routine, especially if you're being treated for a medical condition -- they can help you determine the proper dosage and length of treatment. Women who are pregnant or nursing shouldn't consume noni. Anyone with liver disease or kidney disease should also avoid noni, as it contains high amounts of potassium and may cause damage to the liver.
