Risperidone Interactions with Dietary Supplements
Vitamin E and Vitamin B6
Vitamin E along with vitamin B6 was used to treat a side effect of risperidone called
neuroleptic malignant syndrome in a 74-year-old woman, and results were
encouraging.1 However, whether vitamin E and vitamin B6 supplementation might help
prevent this condition in people taking risperidone is unknown.
Lithium
Lithium is a mineral present in large amounts in some medications, and may be included in some
mineral supplements. The combination of lithium and risperidone has produced unwanted side
effects such as delirium, confusion, and fever.2 3 Smaller amounts of
lithium are available in some nutritional supplements, but it is not known whether these
amounts are enough to cause a problem in individuals taking risperidone.
Risperidone Interactions with Herbs
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza radix) and White peony (Paeoniae
radix)
An Oriental herb formula containing Glycyrrhiza radix (licorice root) and
Paeoniae radix (white peony root) successfully restored menses in a 28-year-old woman who
had developed amenorrhea (lack of menstruation) while taking risperidone.4
Discontinuation of these herbs while the woman continued taking risperidone again led to
disruption of her menses. Controlled research is needed to determine whether supplementation
with licorice and peony might help prevent amenorrhea in women taking risperidone.
Risperidone Interactions with Foods and Other Compounds
Food
oral solution should be mixed in half a glass of water, coffee, orange juice, or
low-fat milk and immediately consumed.5 It should not be mixed with cola or
tea.6
Alcohol
Alcohol increases the breakdown of many antipsychotic drugs.7 More research is
necessary to determine if alcohol consumption might lower blood levels of risperidone.

This medication ought to be taken off the market, and the makers ought to be sued. One month into a two-month treatment cycle with Risperdal, I lost my ability to feel emotions (or really, to become aroused in any form... emotional, spiritual, sexual, or otherwise), my drives became crippled, I stopped feeling attached to my body, my libido was obliterated, I became impotent, I lost my strength and motivation, my imagination and creativity were lost, a hollowness and absence "took over" my insides, etc. etc. etc. I could go on and on. I have not been on the medication for over six months. I am still impotent, still have no libido, my drives are still crippled, the sensation of absence is still in me, I feel chronically weak, feel like I'm floating in my body. Again, I could go on and on. I've filed several complaints with the makers of Risperdal, and two complaints with the FDA. My next step is to seek out a good lawyer. Don't, I repeat DO NOT, use this medication unless you are willing to face some serious, and perhaps permanent, damage. I can't stress this enough. This medication is destructive!

Although I take a realativly low dose, I think that the duration I have taken it would have shown some side effects if there were going to be any. I have noticed a certain diminishment of combative or angy feelings, which is fine, its what I'm taking it for, but aside from that no real negative effects. I do take a cocktail of 3 or 4 meds but I believe I would have noticed any ill effects. If you need this drug I see no reason not to take it.

I gained 12 pounds on Risperidone. I had no energy, was very depressed, experienced paranoia, nightmares, no interest in anything, my creativity was gone, and my usually clear skin was covered in acne. I am drug free now and I would never get on it again.

I am on a low dose of Risperidone and have found it excellent for my scizophrenia. Without it, I would not be able to function. I have tried other meds but they made me gain too much weight. As with all medications, people react differently as we are all different. What might be good for some might be disastrous for others. No one can say "No, don't take this medication because of the effect it had on me", because it might work brilliantly for others. I know of a case where one person was given an antidepressent and it made them suicidal and another person it really helped. So the answer is you might have to just try different ones until you find the one that's right for you, or the closest to being right for you.

While reading the other comments outdated by a year, the answer is, of course you would not in your right mind want to take Risperidone or any other ant-psychotic for that matter. But if you do suffer from Schizophrenia, it is the only way to relieve the pressure of your own psychosis and allow you to function. After time, you can focus your mind, sanely for most people treated, and the side affects are something you must combat but it is better than lung cancer. Compared to Haldol, it allows a much higher functioning life, and though with genomics there may be an answer, Risperidone along with a few others are affective and good with the very negative symptoms of schizophrenia.

I take a more concentrated dose of Risperdone called Invega. I am greatfull for it. I'm on a mood stablizer for Bipolar as well, and I was cycling like mad. The Invega keeps me more stable and I'm better able to manage my mood swings. I do have lack of drive & creativity, but that seems to be more a side effect of the disease than of my medication. Thank god for Invega!

I'm on a low dose of .5mg at bedtime along with Xanax. Before i was taking Risperdone I would have awful night terrors, insane screaming fits during the night that I would not remember by morning. But after Ive been on the medication for several years most episodes have stopped. My wife says I look like a better person. Everyone is different. It made a big difference in my life but it could also cause major damage in yours. Do what works best for you.
