Alprazolam Interactions with Dietary Supplements
Vinpocetine
In a preliminary trial, an extract of periwinkle called vinpocetine was shown to produce minor
improvements in short-term memory among people taking flunitrazepam, a
benzodiazepine.1 Further study is needed to determine if vinpocetine would be a
helpful adjunct to use of benzodiazepines, or alprazolam specifically.
Interaction with Herbs
Kava
(Piper methysticum)
Kava is an herb used to treat anxiety disorder. One individual who took alprazolam and kava
together, along with two other medications (cimetidine and terazosin) was hospitalized in a lethargic and
disoriented condition.2 Further research is needed to determine whether the
combination of kava and alprazolam produces an adverse interaction. However, individuals
should not take alprazolam and kava together unless supervised by a doctor.
Interaction with Foods and other Compounds
Alcohol
Drinking alcoholic beverages while taking alprazolam may increase side effects such as
drowsiness, confusion, and dizziness.3 Consequently, people taking alprazolam
should avoid drinking alcohol, especially when they must stay alert.

Alprazolam has been a life saver for me. I experience terrible panic attacks. My panic attacks can be crippling. Alprazolam stops the panic attacks and I am able to get on with life. I have been on the same dose for several years and it is controlling the attacks. I now know the warning signs and am able to ward them off by taking my medication. To date, I have had no side effects from this drug. I understand it is addictive but I remain under a doctor's care.

Medication: Alprazolam - - I Love It
Medication Type: Generic
Length Taken: Between 3 and 6 months
Strength: 5 mg X 2 times per day
Side Effects: Dry Mouth, Increased Appetite, Increased Sleep, Increased Energy, Weight Gain
Other Products Taken: One a day multi for women, Fulvic mineral complex, melatonin, Tums for the Calcium
Before starting Xanaz I was taking a beta blocker and an antidepressant. They caused some awful side effects such as nervousness, insomnia,
nervous tics, lack of enrgy, irritability, chest pain, inability to concentrate, unneeded weight loss etc., etc. Finally, my doctor agreed to try Xanax. I am now taking only Xanax and my blood pressure is normal, which it never was on the beta blocker, my pulse is down, energy is up, memory is somewhat better, weight is back where it belongs and I sleep at least 8 hours a night. Xanax gave me my life back. I like myself much better and others have commented on the positive changes in my appearance and manner.

Medication: Alprazolam - - Very Good

Side Effects: Addiction, Tollerance (Need to raise dose), Mood Swings
Other Products Taken: None
Your system gets used to Alprazolam, but at least when you're having a panic attack or feeling anxious you know that it will work within 20 minutes. I have been on this drug for at least over 10 years, but the drawback is, you get dependent on it.

Medication: Alprazolam - - I Love It
Medication Type: Generic
Length Taken: More than 1 year
Strength: 0.5 mg X 1 times per day
Side Effects: None
Other Products Taken: Lexapro
Alprazolam (Xanax) is an effective and affordable anti-anxiety medication. I have taken it prn (when needed) over a 20 year period. It is highly addictive if abused and highly effective if not. My physician suggested an antidepressant in the SSRI family (Lexapro) which would help block the chemicals that trigger anxiety attacks. This works well for me - I may only need to an take Alprazolam once every few months after taking the Lexapro. There can be side effects to antidepressants and therefore it may be necessary to try different ones and find what is compatible with your body. A little note for those who have debilitating panic attacks. Take your Alprazolam sublingually (place it under the tongue and let it melt) the taste is horrible but instead of 15-20 minutes to work it works in 5 minutes and gets you out of the acute state of panic.
