Metronidazole Interactions with Dietary Supplements
Saccharomyces
boulardii
The yeast Saccharomyces boulardii may help restore microbial balance in the
intestines and prevent pseudomembranous colitis (PMC), an intestinal disorder caused by
infection with Clostridium difficile. Even when Clostridium difficile is
successfully treated with antibiotics, symptoms recur in about 20% of cases. Saccharomyces
boulardii has been shown in controlled trials to reduce recurrences when given as an
adjunct to antibiotic therapy.1 2 3
Metronidazole Interactions with Herbs
Milk
thistle (Silybum marianum)
Milk thistle has been reported to protect the liver from harm caused by some prescription
drugs.4 While milk thistle has not yet been studied directly for protecting people
against the known potentially liver-damaging actions of metronidazole, it is often used for
this purpose.
Metronidazole Interactions with Foods and Other Compounds
Food
should be taken with food to avoid stomach upset.
Alcohol
Alcohol may interact with metronidazole, causing facial flushing, headache, light-headedness,
nausea, breathlessness, and other symptoms.5 Vinegar typically contains small
amounts of alcohol and should be avoided during metronidazole therapy. People should read all
product labels carefully for alcohol content and should avoid alcohol-containing products
during metronidazole therapy.

Medication Type: Generic
Length Taken: Less than 1 month
Strength: X 3 times per day
Side Effects: Nausea, Stomach Pain, Loss of Appetite, Loss of Energy, Made Me Nauseous
Other Products Taken:
I don't know if my gastroenteritis got better on its own or due to taking Metronidazole, but I am generally better. I found out the hard way, I still have to avoid certain foods though. Although I took the medication with food I still had stomach pain, reduced appetite and severe nausea after taking Metronidazole. So... I'm miserable.

Medication: Metronidazole - - Stay Far Away
Medication Type: Generic
Length Taken: Less than 1 month
Strength: 500 mg X 4 times per day
Side Effects: Headache, Dizziness, Dry Mouth, Nausea, Stomach Pain, Gave Me Gas or Made Me Bloated, Loss of Appetite, Loss of Energy
Other Products Taken:
I don't know if Metronidazole helps or not, but since I had a serious condition (a perforated colon), I couldn't take any chances. I do have to laugh about the "rare" side effects listed on the Internet. The nausea never goes away, I have an awful taste in mouth and am exhausted to the bone. I have been on it for 13 days with only one more day to go.

Medication: Metronidazole - - Stay Far Away

Strength: 500 mg X 2 times per day
Side Effects: Upset Stomach / Diarreha, Gave Me Gas or Made Me Bloated, Loss of Sleep, Loss of Energy, Made Me Nauseous
Other Products Taken: No
I remember taking this medication before, and everyone I ask about it knows how aful it is. The lethargy is bad, but the worst is the nausea. This is only my fourth day and I have three more to go. If the doctor ever tries to give it to me again, I'll remember not to take it next time and ask for something else.
